Puncture saga and cheap tools
« on: May 26, 2015, 05:05:25 pm »
On the way to our weekend destination we had a puncture, I do use the gloopy stuff and apparently it did its job but the tyre had lost a couple of pounds of pressure and stupidly I had left my pump at home. Conveniently there was a pub right there, so we pulled in had a coffee while waiting for the AA man. No leak was detected so with the tyre re-inflated we were on our way. The rest of the journey was pleasant and uneventful. This delay meant that poor old Twisty and his wife Cally had been waiting for us to meet them for an hour. As we arrived they were just leaving so we waved at each other and proceeded to the caf for lunch.
Sunday morning we took a ride into Skegness, there was a bit of drizzle on the way but nothing too extreme. The bike handled normally and the tyre seemed fine. After a walk around Skegness and a stop at the ice cream shop we headed back to the pub b&b.
The tyre was still ok.
Monday morning tyre was flat. AA man out again and a coffee while we were waiting. Inflated the tyre once again and again no leaks detected.
Once at home I checked the pressure once again and all was normal. I left it overnight and again tyre pressure normal.
Being a belt and braces sort of person I thought I would take the wheel off and get my tyre man to check it out for me.

Tyre man checked it and found no leaks. Just to be on the safe side with the Wrinklies trip coming up next week and wanting peace of mind I had a new tyre fitted (Avon Strom Ultra 2 91)

I think what must have happened was that over the weekend I must have had two punctures and the Punctureseal did its job and as a result lost some pressure. If I had had my pump all would have been well. It's going everywhere with me from now on.

Now to the cheap tools bit. Believe it or believe it not I have never had to take a wheel off of a bike to date, even though I have the tools to do so. So out come the torque wrench and torx bits. I didn't think I had bought cheap, however it seems that my torx bit were made of cheese.

So I nipped out and bought a set of these. They did the job fine.

....and it is one of those that I carry with me at all times, together with the rat-shit handle and extension  ::)

Brian (who always has his pump with him if he is going anywhere away from home as opposed to a ride-out and back)

I have two sets of the 3/8 drive Halfords Professional torx bits and they do sometimes break. Not a problem because they are guaranteed for life. I've broken five bits so far and they have changed them no questions asked.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.
