K1300S front disc play

Summary:
Should my front discs have some play in the direction of rotation?

Background:
I had a small knock in my front wheel which Motoliner in Maidstone removed. I did their very convenient 'ride in' service (that bit worked a treat by the way).
Once I was back home I noticed that the discs have a little play (say about 1mm) in the direction of rotation, even though the bolts are tight. Is that as designed?

As an aside, and an irritation, I am getting some brake judder. Do the discs have a set position they should been been reset to? (I couldn't see any marks on the disc and wheel to match them up, i.e. hole 1 on the disc should be match to hole 1 on the wheel, etc.)

Judder might means ball joints.
The disc must have that play that means floating brake disc , so no worries there.

You can sometimes feel a slight knock from the front discs if you hold the brake on and try to push the bike back and forth rapidly. It is only an issue if you have disc run-out or side to side warping of the disc! Our discs are 'floating' on the rivets to allow them to follow a true path through the pads without 'knocking' the pistons back as the disc oscillates.

The discs float to allow them to expand without warping when they heat up.

Update:
- they're floating OK, says NOG (or can I call them NOB?), so Motoliner did a good refit after straightening the wheel
- the discs are also straight, which is good

The pads seem to be the problem (not clear why), but a new set has smoothed the braking out.
Haven't put them on really hard yet, but there's no juddering.

Only to let them change heating and cooling circles smoothly and to avoid sudden overheating. After those first 100 miles all are ok. Is that procedure glazing?

'Glazing' is bad! The reverse of what you've written, Costas. Glazing is cooking the surface by hard braking before the pads have had a chance to go through a few heat cycles like you've described.

I'm a bit of an engine braker (possibly breaker too - I have been through a clutch on other bikes), so I probably need to be careful to warm them up.
I'll let you know the final result next week - commuting 130 miles a day * 5 days next week should bed them in and prove/disprove the solution.  :P

Never bothered with all that nonesense! Hammer them on and get on with it! Never had a problem in cars or bikes and mine last as long as others seem to and are just as effective!
