front brake bobbins
« on: September 09, 2025, 09:16:21 am »
hello,
I hope everyone is well!
My problem now is with the brake discs, they have a play both laterally, as is normal, but also front-rear, which worries me!
Question: on the OEM brake disc, are the coils/rivets fixed or can they be removed and replaced?
I'm asking to find out the easy way!

I don’t know if the bobbins are available separately, but I’ve just had a quick look at mine, there is a slight amount of lateral movement and a greater amount of rotational movement. If you grip the disc on opposite sides you can physically rotate it slightly on the bobbins with a little effort. I don’t have the equipment to hand to accurately measure it so can’t offer any figures. I don’t know how much play is acceptable, but they feel reasonably tight and the movement doesn’t feel excessive, just normal floating disc movement, and there’s virtually no wear on the thickness. My thoughts are that unless they feel physically loose, or the play seems excessive they are probably ok, but if you suspect they are out of spec have them checked by the dealers mechanic for hopefully free “advice” first before going to the parts counter.
For reference, my bike has covered 28000 miles and I’ve just recently replaced the original pads.

Haven't checked mine but the fronts are floating discs while the rear has a floating caliper I believe if that makes any difference?

I'll check them out when I get a minute...

I have just done this for my partner's KTM 890 Adv R.
Grab the new ones of Ebay, drill out the old ones, replace using c clips, quick and easy.
3 months later no issues.
If your are reading this, you need to move onto the next post.

I feel obligated to update:
although the informed opinions said that the play is within parameters, it is normal to exist, I followed the less informed opinions and bought new Brembo Serie Oro discs dedicated to this model.
I dismantled the OEM discs and I want to share my experience, maybe it will help someone someday:
1. the play is natural, the disc holes, the ones for mounting on the wheel are OVAL, hence the possibility of moving slightly in the direction of rotation
2. the bushings on the OEM disc are not stamped, so they can be disassembled and replaced with the set that can be found separately at Brembo
3. the Serie Oro discs have nothing extra, just a channel on the edge of the disc, so I do not consider it an upgrade in the case of our motorcycles

I greet you and I wish you not to spend money due to the lack of information!😋

Ah! Very useful, codrin. That sounds like an expensive way to find out, though.
So you're saying the bobbins/bushes don't need drilling out  - you can take them apart?

> the set that can be found separately at Brembo
Do you have a reference / link?

on the original discs the coils are provided with a washer and a bushing as well. I think they can be removed relatively easily by pressing.
this would be a link but I saw that there are several types, for different disc sizes.
in essence it is not that complicated as long as the bushings are for discs with a thickness of 5 mm.
