Ultimate Ear Sound Ear
« on: September 04, 2025, 10:33:50 am »
I have had these https://ultimateear.com/product/soundear-motorcycle-custom-ear-plug/ for a few months and thought I would give a review.
At first I bought the squidgy ear plugs, they made an appointment for me at a nearby audiologist to have the impressions made. So when I decided to upgrade to the Sound Ear there was no need to have the impressions done again. They make a digital copy and keep it on file.

If you struggle to get the volume high enough on your present setup you really should consider the Sound Ear. On my previous setup I had all volumes at maximum and I could hear sat nav and phone and intercom OK. With the new setup I have had to turn the volume down and I mean right down to just off silent the difference is astounding.

I've got some of those and agree they are very good. With the speakers in my SRL-3 and ear plugs in I could just about hear stuff at full volume. With the sound ear plugs I can hear better at minimum volume.

It seems that the battery in the SRL3 lasts longer too, which would make sense... full volume all the time must use more power.

i have a pair too! Great minds, etc.

I find they are very good with one minor exception:
- I like the maximum noise reduction I can get and the noise attentuation (31dB) is not as good as a well fitted orange Howard Leight Max (37dB).

However, different ears work better/worse with different earplugs, so your experience may differ. I know a lot of people just don't get on with the Howard Leights (they need to be properly rolled to a point and quickly shoved in - tight!).

I can't fault the fit and quality though, so I still recommend them.

Having switched from Schuberth's SRL3 to the Shoei system I am left without the (simple) ability to use my in-ear monitors.

I have resorted to using the buds without the monitors in as ear plugs but the noise reduction ks (perhaps obviously) not as good. I need to find some non roll-up type plugs as I have never managed to get one to stay in.

What interests me is the fact sheet says 31dB but I guarantee my ultimateear soundear and the normo ones are deeper than yours. And probably everyone else's. When I went to their Kent HQ a few years back they redid the mould process 2 or 3 times to get it deeper. This was because their initial attempt was much shallower than my original pair. So we kept trying. So surely mine having a few mm more material will block more than one with less. So I wonder what the nominal length is that they came up with the number for.

Every other earplug I've tried had blocks less sound. Subjectively. Including those orange ones.

Anyway! I keep forgetting to try the soundears with comms. I haven't used them since commuting days when I'd plug em into my phone.
