OK. To save you searching again...

Things to worry about...

Front ESA wiring loom failure
Paint flaking off most things
Throttles sticking open for no apparent reason
Camchain tensioner 'failure' - resulting in...
Camchain jumping the crankshaft sprocket - resulting in pistons hitting valves
Poor idle and stalling when coming to a rest
Rear dog-bone seizure
Ball-joint failure
Fuel level sensor failure
Radiator clogging externally and falling apart
Clutch rattles/squeals etc.

Things not to worry about...

The bang going into 1st - they really do all do that
Exceeding all UK speed limits in 1st - ditto  8)
Thanks for taking the time to post that. I'll keep it all in mind.  ;)

Absolutely Richard, but from memory you have never owned a 12.

And I do not recall you owning an 07/08 1200 Brian which was a quantum leap from the heap of junk that was the 04/05/06 that BMW palmed off on the public,I test ride a 1000 mile 06 demonstrator from Clark’s on the Lickies and was complete rubbish.

Fast forward too 08 by which time I was moving pressbikes for MCN collected a blue and silver version from Vines who in those days ran the press fleet and it wasn’t needed straightaway so took it home for a couple of days..... an absolute world away and hence me buying my R Sport which in fairness needed a clutch mod but has non of the traits listed here.

On what year of bike did coil failure stop being a feature?
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

I'm not sure it did/has! Coils nearly always fail at some point but it is a question worthy of some data.

So, which high-milers KNOW that their coils are original? Martin???

My 12 coils were perfectly OK at 40k miles, not that that is high mileage 8)

You are quite right Chris, but those who have only had later 12’s/13’s missed and maybe never paid attention to the early bikes, whereas those of us who had early bikes paid a huge amount of attention to the later 12’s and 13’s, often with envy.

I read Kevin's disparaging road test report of the K12 (now lost to posterity as his original website was closed as it was too difficult for Caroline to maintain) about 3 weeks after I took mine home and even at that stage I was glad that he slagged it off because I was convinced I had forgotten how to ride.

The rest as they say...

You are fairly unique in that you were in at the beginning and with an inside line on the industry.

Hi all,

I'm Les, just bought an 07 1200GT after owning 3 K11LT's and various sports bikes along the way. How did I not know how good the GT is? Been out a couple of times so far and have been seriously impressed. Comfort, speed, handling. You could say I'm pleased with my purchase ;D.

Welcome les. If you can, post a few pics of your bike. I run an 08 k1200s. Other than a fried battery and a bit clutch rattle, mines been fine for the (granted, not as many miles as some do on here) almost 20,000 miles I’ve done on it. Take out the extended warranty if you can, and just enjoy tour new bike. 👍

Can you copy that and paste it cos there is no way we are all gonna give the rag our email address, inside leg measurement, granny's middle name etc. However, that is the original review from the pico-secong view I get of it before they want mynadgers on a fork.

My K12 coils were replaced at the 90k service

The coils on my K1200S failed at about 40k

That was another big bill to add to:

Front ball joints, ABS pump, radiator and switch gear (pre BMW free replacement) :(

I never did address the stalling when coming to a stop but at least the clutch lasted!

Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.
