My K1300S is in for its 36k service, so here's the Bike Du Jour:

Pros:
- excellent electric screen. Does the job far better than you might expect considering its diminutive size
- good usable power in 3rd and 4th. 4th is about equivalent beans to 6th on the K, and a nice gear for flowing A/B roads.
- good suspension, better than a K
- looks much neater than the 1250 models

Cons:
- no noticable vibes whilst riding (too busy concentrating?) but I had numb fingers on stopping (45 min ride), and now they're tingling. Hmm.
- quickshifter can be violent in lower gears
- menus, not buttons. It's another one you would get used to as an owner, but trying to find Dynamic suspension mode - who knows - even the service guy struggled. We came to the conclusion it probably doesn't have it, but who knows. And heated grips? You'll spend more time looking at the screen than the road.
- I kicked the engine bars several times when taking my feet off the pegs. It's not too bad - just something you'll remember not to do if you owned it long term.
- I can't put the balls of my feet on the pegs without the back of my boots touching the rear pegs. There's no way round that. Annoying.
- mud was starting to creep up the pillion seat even after a short ride, so a bit rubbish on gunge protection

Overall it doesn't feel like 15 years of engineering advances over a K.
It's defo more modern (clocks, suspension, ride by wire, and so on) but not enough aspects have improved.

I wanted to like it. I didn't.
Ms Cashmere was very pleased to hear that.

Down a dead-end road that runs to the banks of the River Severn.
It's a very small pub, but with a lovely lady running it (for past 30 years) serving home-cooked food.
And proper cider, but I couldn't touch that on a bike - waaay too dangerous!

As the website rightly shouts:
PORK BELLY COOKED IN LOCAL WESTONS CIDER NOT TO BE MISSED

And fried eggs from her ducks!

Opening times are a bit random due to size and possibly just a one woman band, but as of 2024 it's:
- Tuesday to Sunday lunch 12-14.30 hrs
- Friday/Saturday evenings

The lady said she is flooded 5-6 months of the year, so I'd say she's worth supporting.

View to the Severn from the huuuge parking area - that's about half of it gone already:

The Whiskey Barrel / MRA and Whisky
« on: March 31, 2024, 07:59:32 pm »
I hate the stuff, but for those that do (and use MRA), you could try joining the dots:

https://www.myrouteapp.com/route/open/8860901

(from here: https://forum.myrouteapp.com/topic/6473/whisky-distilleries-scotland)

I'm sure there must be a whisky equivalent to the Munros - you know, ride between the 114(or whatever) distiliieries without getting a ticket within the 90 days of winter.

The Euro K Club Lounge / Who owns K1200S KU07PVS (noise cameras)?

The Atkins Jacobs Joint Venture presumably.

See the article:

KU07PVS aka Vehicle C

You might hope they would use a vehicle with an MOT as a good starting point for testing:
✗ MOT Vehicle KU07PVS does not have a valid MOT certificate

I know, it's probably tucked up somewhere warm and dry in MIRA.

The Euro K Club Lounge / K1300S key - any intelligence in it?
« on: March 16, 2024, 04:07:57 pm »
I've managed to lose my key - the cat ate it or something (if in doubt, blame the youngest member of the household).

Is the K1300S key a plain key, or does it have some active piece in the plastic? It looks too small to hold anything to me, but what do I know.

In other words, can I buy a blank off eBay and get it cut, or am I beholden to BMW?

Thanks.

The Euro K Club Lounge / Google Drive - images not showing (Jan 24)
« on: January 24, 2024, 09:41:57 am »
A lot of our images are no longer showing in old posts.
It is a known fault/issue, and probably(?) not the evil darklord Google excercising his unbounded power.

There is a very temporary work-around below for new posts, which will display your image, most likely at a lower resolution, but it appears usable for our purposes.
However, imgbb is the best bet right now (as of Jan 24).

Follow the original instructions, but change step 2 to:

2. The magic bit: Add your image ID into a special 'direct' URL. The basic 'direct' URL is:
https://drive.google.com/thumbnail?id=XXXXXXX&sz=w800

Adding your unique image ID gives:
https://drive.google.com/thumbnail?id=1aE8S0SPTusdtpcQuTQFYjfl4JYtFPISH&sz=w800

Then step 3 as before - wrap with [img], etc.

Example below:

K1200 / K1300 Forum / K1300S / R1300 GS
« on: January 04, 2024, 12:58:13 pm »
Can I be the first to complain about search engines not distinguishing between 'BMW K1300' and 'BMW R1300'?

We can expect K1300 searches to be swamped by a tide of boxer twin results in the next year or two. Tch. ::)

At risk of devaluing my own bike, this seems to be a bloody good Motorsport, if anyone's looking in this grim early winter:
https://www.wiganyamaha.co.uk/used-motorcycle/bmw-k1300s-motorsport-2014-50887

Sports pannier, tank bag, hugger, centre stand and MRA deflector thrown in.

[EDIT: sold, says Forcefield, if you've come here all excited!]

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Small BMW Rear Bag (77498562634) versus QBag
« on: November 03, 2023, 03:45:25 pm »
I didn't know this BMW rear bag existed - maybe you didn't either:
https://www.shopbmwmotorcycles.com/oem-parts/bmw-motorrad-luggage-carrier-bag-77498562634
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394371024545

It's main attractions, to me at least, are:
- it's a tidder bag, big enough for tools, small enough not to disturb the handling at speed
- it has a sleeve underneath to slide onto the luggage rack, plus two securing straps so its very secure
- properly waterproof
- carrrying handle if you want to take it away

And the downsides:
- price is north of £100
- seems quite rare (it's manual is dated 2016, so possibly out of production)

I have not tested this properly, by the way - just saying it exists somewhere in my house, and Christmas is coming.  ;D

I also have a QBag, and really wanted to like it, but gave up after a few months because I couldn't get the flimsy baseplate to stay still on the rack - the bag was always moving around a few millimetres however tight the straps were.

QBag link:
https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/313404

QBag pros:
- price is excellent
- fit is nice and tidy on a K rear rack

QBag cons:
- the 'baseplate' is difficult to keep tightly strapped on a K rack
- not waterproof
- not as sturdy as the BMW bag

The Euro K Club Lounge / Excellent Australian MotoGP main race (Saturday)
« on: October 21, 2023, 03:49:43 pm »
Well worth watching it unfold, if you have the chance (on BT/Discovery+/TNT/RandomMeaninglessName).
Note that the long race was Saturday, not Sunday this week.

I won't say who won, obvs, but let's say there was some very fine tyre judgement applied.

Do you go soft and risk running out of tyre early, or do you go harder, and hope the other folks burn theirs out? Oh what fun.

The Euro K Club Lounge / GS-911 - 10% off with Bennetts

Just in case anyone is about to buy one, you can get 10% off via Bennetts:

They're not cheap, obvs, but on the other hand they work well.

Tyres / Today's interesting K1300S Michelin Road 6 fact...
« on: October 16, 2023, 08:10:35 pm »
You just had to open the post to find out, didn't you?
Clickbait FTW.

Two factoids, actually:

1. Michelin no longer recommend the Road 6 GT variant for the K1300S, it's now the standard Road 6.

and

2. The plain Road 6 (i.e. non-GT) cost me £50 less than in May. Same place as the May fitting, Wheelhouse Tyres, Coleshill.

And no, I don't understand either, but since I very rarely have a pillion, I suspect a plain Road 6 would be fine anyway. Maybe they  improved the carcass, or just recalibrated their tests?
And the price? Either plain is *much* cheaper than GT, or maybe production has recovered from the Ukraine/Russia war hit.

The GT pair lasted just over 7,000 miles of France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and France again. With Wales thown in a few times for good measure. Probably the most enjoyable 5 months of riding I've had.

The rear ran out first, and was right on the legal limit, Policeman Officer.
The front had another 500 miles maybe more. I'm pretty happy with 7k. Lets see how the plain Road 6s get on.

Back with you in 6-7k miles time...
