Honda Pantechnicon
« on: May 25, 2015, 05:05:57 pm »
As some of you may know Melanie and I have been away for the weekend, very nice it was too.

I was having a chat with the Landlord of the pub and to show me that he knew a bit about bikes he told me about a guy that came in the pub a while ago who was telling him that if he ever tipped over his Pantechnicon he would never be able to right it again.
Suppressing a smile I turned to Melanie and we both mouthed to each other "he means Pan European"

If this guy by chance did have a Pantechnicon and dropped it, he and several mates would have to be 25 feet tall to right it.

They only go over as far as the strake bars  ;)
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

For those of us who have failed to pick our bike up single-handed (and in my case, even struggled to right the GS with the burly observing copper assisting me to pick it up two-handed), try this 'girlie' site:

http://www.pinkribbonrides.com/dropped.html

There is a video somewhere of her doing it but I couldn't make it open on my iPad!

Brian (who thinks it is simpler to not drop it, but that seems easier said than done)

Have you tried turning off the child safety settings? ;)

I can't find a responsible adult to do that for me  ;D

And I can't find a 7 year old to make it work.

Wait until Sunday and you can do a demo for us.  ;)

I usually find that embarrassment helps me pick it up real quick.  :-[

I like the way in your link that the girl was wearing a skirt perhaps to emphasize that she was a girlie.

ah - learn from the Goldwings, Harley and K12LT owners - walk it up. Stand with back to fallen over bike, grasp with hands (behind you) and "walk it up". Them leg muscles is the strongest and up it will come (and over the other way if you're not careful). Anyway, you get the idea.

I got that technique from owning a K12LT, and the fact that peeps would roll into it when parked and push it over on to the tip over wings

had to lift mine off the ground this week  :-[ bloody Swiss and their 2 height roundabout lanes  >:( was slowly going around what seemed like the hundreth roundabout that afternoon and from the description of the guy behind me, "the front wheel jumped up the ridge and the back wheel didn't!" rapidly followed by the back end kicking out and the bike lowsiding me
the bike was easy peasy to lift, even with a banged up arm and shoulder   :D and my gear worked as well !

looks like a change in tarmac colour to distinguish lanes

actually has a 3" angled rise to it as well (not easy to see in flat light )

Bugger and damn! I think all such changes in height should be marked with white lines, they are bad at the worst of times, killers on a bike!

There is a series of new'ish roundabouts at the new'ish entrances to Aldermaston bomb works, two of which I use every couple of days. They are 'mini' roundabouts, bigger than paint spots, with a high kerb, but they have an area of brick setts about 3 feet wide surrounding them and that has a totally flat kerb edge to it and then there is the tarmac. The road is not too wide and this makes it really easy for cars and trucks and a lovely 'cut' for bikes.

However, much to my chagrin, last year I went along the road the other side of the site which leads down to Aldermaston village; two more roundabouts, but this time they had RAISED brick setts with about a 3" kerb. I almost pitched in too fast but spotted a white van taking the long way round (most unusual for such a creature) and banged on the brakes. Absolutely ridiculous especially when the 'bouts the other side have flat sett areas.

Had a right whinge at the council but all to no avail, obviously.

Brian (who has no idea why it is always the front that climbs the kerb and the rear that doesn't, when his 'logic' says it should be t'other way round)

I personally had to lift bike three times up to now, every time was the rear not following the front tire and always with speed less than ten kms, so I too blame the road surface, see IMHO constructors drive big trucks and never bikes so they accommodate their needs accordingly.
A plus bike has only plastics bits to repaint. II know better if it had no pieces to repaint at all.
