Wowzers... Just made a mess in me trousers!
« on: May 28, 2024, 03:07:13 pm »
 ;D

So, new member intro as requested.
Back in the day some time in my 20's I hooned around on A Kawasaki Z550GT that I'd stripped out and put GPZ pistons, cams, head etc etc in. Went OK, but eventually it consumed it's self through abuse, and I retired from 2 wheels having a company car with "free" fuel so that was the nail in the coffin.

Jump forward 3 to 4 decades and the state of "forced" semi retirement from our Gym Equipment business, the clutch failing on my van, and various other coincidences, and getting a bike again made plenty sense.

As it happened a low mileage 2010 K1300R popped up on  FB Market place only about 25 miles away.
Loved the look so did some research and apart from the immense power, all I was seeing was massive praise.  I had to have it!
Somewhat hesitant about such a "beast" but shaft drive, anti skid, ABS, "special" electrickery suspension, and rear/front linked brakes. I felt there was plenty of safety stuff to keep me from doing anything too schtoopid.

A quick clearout of the garage and a trip to the trader. No test ride, just "take my money" and "when can you deliver?"  Followed by some new kit shopping on the way home!

The rest, as the saying goes is history.
It took me several days to pluck up the courage to try riding a bike again, and when I wobbled up the road with erratic clutch control and no gear/rev "matching", and extreme wobbliness caused by the mini-fairing and displays not turning with the handle bars, I wondered what I was doing!

Just went for a 100 mile wonder and soon found that the windy buffeting made it supremely simple to actually stay within the speed limit.
No frantic caged psycho-best trying to kill me, more of a gentle BullMastiff with muscle and attitude but hidden behind the gentle nurturing and extremely protective personality.

Every time I have taken the beauty out "for a walk" everything just gets easier and easier.  Nearly there on blipping to rev match for down shifts, and it's all coming together so sweetly.

I am Sooooooo glad I didn't wimp out of getting such a magnificent beast by way of fear of the unknown "power".

I have yet to venture further up the power band to the dark side where the wild stallions lurk, quite happy plodding around in 6th at the speed limit and getting an average of 55mpg !

p.s.  Either I'm colour blind or what is described as the colour "black" or "grey" to my eyes seems to be more of a dark green.  Oh, and nearly forgot, the speedshift is a thing of magical wonderment!

Hello and welcome. it's a nice bike to get back into biking with.
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

Welcome in, we have an event that's not a million miles from you next week, but if you are still a bit wobbly it might not be for you or it could get you back in the groove take a look, https://eurokclub.bike/index.php?topic=5288.0

Welcome Pete. And welcome back to the fold!

It's nice to know that we can use as much of the throttle as we decide, using more mature brain power! :)

I always loved the R, but didn't even know it existed until I came here some time after getting my first K1300S.

Don't forget to give BMW lots of money to check it over at some stage too! There are one or two of our lot down your way who will know if you've got a decent local lot i'm sure.

Lastly before I go back to freezing, have you considered some fun time training to avoid falling into any cliche statistics? I can say the CSS used to be good, and also for some proper learning, the BMW Offroad Skills weekends in Wales are awesome! I suppose those are at both extremes of our usage of the things. Fast and slow. Then we got the IAM and RoSPA stuff which I keep meaning to have a go at!

Thanks Rae.
I'm not up to "finding the edge" of traction just yet.
I'd not want to be either enticed into exceeding my current capabillities by keeping up with far more in-tune riders, nor be the tortoise slowing down the fun, and I know I'd be sucked into the first option.   ;)

I'll wait until I have a few more miles in my pocket.
Looks great though.

The bike has got a full BMW service history all stamped up. Since 2018 the only milege added appears to have been 8 miles a year to the BMW agent for a "12 monthly" service and MOT.  The bike has 26,000 miles on it so it's safe to say that the BMW garage would have done the 24,000 valve clearance checks on last service because they aren't going to let that one slip.

Next required service is stamped as 32,000 miles so I'll be doing that myself.
Only couple of things I need to sort is a suitable pair of paddock stands so I can whip off the wheels and see if it really is possible to dig out the potting compound from the tyre pressure sensors to replace the batteries, and also to find the cheapest way of hooking up an OBD2 reader to reset the annoying "12 month service warning"

I have an OBD Eleven device for my VW van and a 10-pin to OBD2 connector lead but after a forced OBD Eleven software update the app no longer sees the device as a Gen 2 unit (which it is) and I'm not giving that company any more money.

Just need a hack so I can use the OBD Eleven device with the other android app that seems to do everything required.

Oh yes, I have been considering finding an "advanced rider" type course.  I have also chatted to somone that did an off-road rider course in Wales. Looked like a great experience. He actually went all the way from Jersey to attend!
Pretty confident my "road craft" with lines, observation, positioning ect is fairly reasonable as I've always driven cars using "police" positioning etc and complemented by an advanced driving instructor when as a service engineer we all had 1:1 training to reduce the company insurance premiums, but it's be nice to have that re-affirmed and any bad habits picked up by expert eyes.

Cheers

Hey Pete, welcome to the forum! Congrats on your new steed and a return to the fold.

If the rain ever stops it won't take long before your confidence & riding skill will increase exponentially as you become more accustomed to it. It's just like riding a bike mate... ;D

Despite riding many bikes in my time I still find it scary when going WOT and I have 15hp less than you!

In February last year after thinking my biking days were over when I was forced to sell my Thunderace I had for 19 years to pay bills during COVID I ended up with a 21k mile K1300GT EE and its by far the best bike I've ever ridden. I don't think there's another bike out there at any price I'd take in its place.

Similar to yours my bike was regularly serviced at the same dealer it was purchased from brand new but don't take for granted that what was supposed to have been done was actually carried out just because the book has been stamped. If you have the original service paperwork and/or history for it that would be a better guide.

For example when I pulled the bodywork to give it the once over I checked the air filter and it was dated 2011 and was chock full of fluff, dust, insects etc. When I rang the same dealer to buy a replacement I was told they don't hold any in stock. Now I get it is an older bike but when all is said and done for a main dealer not to hold what must be a pretty common consumable service item on the shelf does not inspire confidence to this customer.

When asked they quoted £35.89 to order one in for me but the genuine article is available here https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-69085-mahle-air-filter-lx1892-for-bmw-motorcycles-k-1300.aspx?variantid=90582 for £16.99 with the possibility of an extra 10% off using the code EUROK if its still active.

I always wonder what else they didn't do but I know something they did. After a valve check at 15,763 miles they ended up fitting a new rocker gasket and spark plug gasket 1,000 miles later because of an oil leak and a 3rd attempt 1,000 miles after that for a recurring oil leak while charging the previous customer £5 for seal compound.

That was probably the same 1" string of silicon I found hanging down like snot where they had tried to bodge a bead of silicon inline with the gasket on the outside corner of the cam cover in their second attempt to cure the leak following work they carried out.

Can you tell I have no confidence in this dealer despite my being under the impression that because it was BMW I would somehow have exceptional customer service?  ::)

Just as well its a fantastic machine as when I ride it any negativity is vanquished and I thoroughly enjoy being a born-again biker while seeing an increase to 50.4mpg since replacing that air filter!

Enjoy!

Why do these places/apparently qualified people have so much trouble with these gaskets? Same thing happened at my valve service with the KTM. I had to take it back a couple hundred miles later too!

Welcome Pete!

> the BMW garage would have done the 24,000 valve clearance checks
It's 18k for valves, so you're OK until 36k.

> it really is possible to dig out the potting compound from the tyre pressure sensors to replace the batteries
Don't bother. Buy these for £15 a pair:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255690469537
Note you will need to activate them using a GS911 or cheap alternative. See more details here:
https://eurokclub.bike/index.php?topic=5045.msg65545#msg65545

Which neatly leads on to:
> the cheapest way of hooking up an OBD2 reader to reset the annoying "12 month service warning"
With a circular and overly chunky weird connector.

If your existing ODB dongle isn't using the genuine ELM 327 chipset, then you'll need to either stump up for a GS911 - they have considerable value secondhand so it's not all sunk cost - or go a little cheaper with:
- Motoscan app + UniCarScan or Motoscan app + OBDLink.
Whichever, they are both genuine ELM 327 chipsets, which is the bit that matters.

That will let you reset the service reminder, and possibly enable the TPMS, but no guarantees on the second one. See here:
https://eurokclub.bike/index.php?topic=3426.msg42355#msg42355

Or better still, politely suck up to nearby member who has a GS911. I think Rae can guide you on that one, via the member's map.

On the members map the members in red have gs911s and are willing to share.
With the caveat that the map is as up to date as the information I receive. The yellow ones have GS911 alternatives.

... but there are two types, depending on where the valves are positioned. Those fit Mostorsport editions and some k13s where the valve is in 'normal' position in the rim, but many K13's have the valve in the spoke. For these you need the type without a valve stem that are held in place with a hollow aluminium screw.

My back wheel is 17 x 6.00 and has the regular valve coming out of the wheel but the front has the valve coming sideways out of the base of a spoke so one of each required then.
Thanks all for the help and advice.

Cheers
