Shift Control Housing Cover oil leak-which Sealant?
« on: January 02, 2022, 02:41:38 pm »
Thanks Phmode for helping solve the oil leak from the shift control housing cover. Since there isn't a gasket there BMW recommends the Corning sealant. That stuff is very expensive and I have received 2 alternate suggestions: Hylomar which doesn't harden and Yamabond 5 which does harden. Does anyone know which is better or closest to the BMW Corning sealant? Any tips when I pull the cover off and clean the edges? My K1300R was sitting for years and only has 4K KMs.

My thanks!

I would go with Blue Hylomar.

Clean surfaces well, apply to both surfaces and allow time for it to go off (touch dry).

Bolt together.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Black Loctite works well and matches the engine, at least until the paint flakes off.

Thanks guys! I guess my big issue (motorcycle-wise) is to either use the stuff that remains pliable or to use the one that hardens. Your info is greatly appreciated!

Makes not much difference once it all bolted together but my preference is always to use stuff that doesn't set like concrete. Which is probably why my drive is a bit wonky  ::)
