Fuel Pump flange (re)recall
« on: August 23, 2020, 11:10:05 am »
Anybody hear anything else about this recall just announced?
https://www.rideapart.com/articles/440296/2020-recall-bmw-motorcycles-3/

The article is USA specific, and I can't find anything about other areas.  The recall is to start on 2nd October.

I'll contact my local BMW dealer closer to the day. They have been brilliant with performing outstanding recalls since I bought the bike (free of charge), even though I'm the 3rd owner and the bike is 12 years old.

In Greece, the dealers simply replaced the entire fuel pump for all bikes, under the recall.

In UK, they inspected the bike, if it was leaking it got a new pump,if it wasn't leaking (mine and most others) they were fobbed off with the support ring. Pathetic, and now it coming back to bite them.

Of course, in UK nothing will be done because we don't have such great class-action lawyers nor such a safety conscious DoT.

Didn't you change yours for a metal one Brian? Maybe you could re-post a link.

I did on the K12S. I fitted it because with my sticking throttles the tank was coming off more often than a ladyof ill reputes underwear and the dry-break was in imminent danger of failing.

However, it is the base into which the brass dry-break union screws that fails. Fitting the metal valve does nothing for the fuel pump flange.

For completeness, here is the linky link thingy to the screwy screw thingy...

Hi guys back on again after a 9 year lay off after my last K1200s got destroyed by a mad Frenchman. Anyway got myself a 2005 K1200S for a knock down price .... well it was silly not too, went to Clark BMW for a new clutch price....... excuse me sir why are you on the floor, lol   anyway turns out there were 3 recaps on my bike , rear wheel flange, cam chain tensioner and guide, to be retrofitted, and fuel tank pump replacement. Been going on for 2 years now in the US of A   originally the small crack in the plastic at the bottom of the fuel tank was repaired with a spring clip to draw the cracked plastic ridge together, but that's been condemned  in the US of A, so world wide recap, to rectified problem. Requires new fuel pump ect ECT ECT.  Can't get the parts in the UK and Europe ...... because they are all going yo the US of A 1st ....... why I hear you ask ....? Well as the technicians  told me.... they just take your ass to court, but in the UK we just moan,,,, OH and the tech told me get a set of clutch plates as we are in that side of the engine to do the cam chain tensioner, save you having to buy the stretch bolts and gasket later,  . So long shot new clutch fitted and chain guide and tensioner,  rear wheel flange changed to a header grade of ALLOY, but bike still in bits because BMW waiting on stock of fuel pumps ect, they say another month or so, recall for this work just started in the last few months, if your not sure just pop down to your local BMW dealer ,  give them your reg number and they will let you know if there are any outstanding recalls on you bike .

Hi there Marcus and welcome (back) to the madhouse that is EuroKClub!

Wow! It sounds like your knock-down price K12 hasn't been anywhere near a dealer since, well, maybe forever.

The jump guard and tensioner mods were back in 2012'ish...memory fades on such horrors.

Good luck. Brian

:) cheers guys , just noticed, spell check has been at it again lol, anyway yes the k1200s has been sat for a couple of years not much use at all, lots and lots of BMW  paperwork for services ect  but looks like it has slipped  through the net with recall updates, having said that the bike runs very well, even thought the clutch plates were well past there service limit, and the leaver bit instantly,  there were no clutch noise,  slipping ect , so I'm confident  it will be all good again when I get it back, just in time for the snow ....... lol ,42,000 miles engine sounds good  everything works as it should, and it's still a cracking looking bike, for not a lot of money,  long ma that continue

The important one is the cam chain tensioner....BM spent 5 years dancing around their handbag, and finally the penny dropped with all the clutch issues and changed the oil spec from 10 to 5W, the problem then being the cam chain tensioner wouldn’t hold the oil...hence the recall.

One step forward ...... then two back..... looks like they got there in the end, just like when my bike was destroyed in France in 2011, rear ended on a duel carriageway, spat off the bike , it's on its side for about 2 mins, dry sump ...... hay Presto a con rod  introduced itself to the outside world,  a bit like an alien,  no tilt switch fitted, only rectified  when the K1300S was launched I think , As I  say BMW  a bit like the old British Rail get there eventually
