Hm yeah, can't see any cracks, just the wear from the tyre. Can you point out/circle/photo the bit that failed?

As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Mine has broken the same, the steel bracket that bolts to the final drive hub by the disc. can't see why it should have failed, there was no pressure on it. another job for the winter !

i can see a loose, possibly broken bolt- the furthest forward one but as others have said i can't see what the hugger failure is....i certainly see the aftermath, something has gone wrong but what?
i don't have a puig or indeed any other sort of hugger but my nose is bothering me now...

Found a new one on eBay   https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-K-1300-S-2009-PUIG-REAR-MUDGUARD-HUGGER-FENDER-BLACK/191992779501?hash=item2cb3a952ed:g:EmgAAOSw8Ytdc5Ji

It looks like the plastic part has fractured ( about 6" ) just after the metal bracket ends on the left, in the two middle pictures.

It would then have been caught by the tyre & folded under the metal bracket.

Would have caused a bit/lot of a braking effect which could have had serious concequences if you had been healed over on a bend, especially if the road was wet.

This is from the eBay listing :-
To obtain certification the Puig mudguards are tested at laboratories of TÜV SÜD group accredited by the German Ministry of Transport.

I guess it needed a litttle more testing :o

I think in the interests of not being in the top three for the final of The Darwin Awards, I would have gone with an Ilmberger... 8)

Thanks for the questions and sorry for the delay. Been a mad couple of days with work!

There is a small metal bracket that bolts on to the hub on to which you bolt the rear mounting point. This bracket fatigued which caused the hugger to pivot forward on the front bolt and into the tyre.

Fortunately it didn't completely give out otherwise it could have jammed between the swing arm and the rear tyre which would have been disappointing to say the least.

I'll never buy a Puig product again. Their customer service has been appalling, just directing me back to a retailer in the UK with the receipt which I don't have. The design has been updated looking at the current product so they must know it was an issue.

Has anyone else had the same issue? I had 6 comment that they'd experienced failures on Facebook... Definitely not an isolated incident

...and foresight. An Ilmberger on my K12 and another on my K13.

They have an amazing reputation with no gimmicky mounting stuff. Smug x 2  8)
