Final drive... what's a normal temperature?
« on: August 02, 2019, 08:30:14 pm »
I've just been out for a quick spin, not very far... 20 miles maybe. I happened to touch the final drive casing and it was quite warm. This is my first shaft drive bike and I'm not sure what temperature I was expecting it to be, so thought I ask on here what is considered normal.

At 140*F you can not hold your hand on it for any length of time (10 seconds). Oil works just fine at 180 to to 220. Don't worry about a thing. Your final drive will not get too hot.

I change tires cheap, you buy on the web. Drop ship to me, I install for $50 and we can look over your bike while on the lift.

Obviously with moving parts it is going to get warm. Don't over think it here, ride, enjoy.

Am in total agreement with the gentlemen above. Its summer time, all parts get really warm.  .

Not an expert here. I've got the bike for 10 k miles now, and the final drive is always warm when I finish riding, even in Winter. It is not hot enough to hurt my hand, but it makes it a bit uncomfortable. So I guess somewhere around 45C (my experience is that 50C already hurts to the touch). The first days I got a bit worried but now, after two regular services at the dealer and 10 k miles, I just assume it is normal.

Thanks for the replies. I'm no longer concerned about the temperature but still curious. I do have another toy that I might try pointing at the final drive, if it ever stops raining that is. The toy in question is a Flir IR camera that plugs into my phone. It is remarkably sensitive; here are a few examples...

A hand...

A horse in a field, taken in pitch darkness...

Central heating pipes through the floor and carpet....

It's a remarkable device. I bought it initialy because someone told me it could see which keys had been pressed on a cash point or card machine keypad, which it actually can. It works on plastic computer keyboards too, but less well, and can even see heat footprints on the floor.

Ok well we must all avoid being in front of you in any pubs or cash machines if you ever come on the outings!
