k12r Cat Cams
« on: November 28, 2018, 01:40:11 pm »
Hello,

does anyone know if there are cat cams for k12?

I would like to install a proper 1st/2st stage cams and valve springs so i can rev up more with considerable power gains.

Thanks

I took a punt at hot cams - Stage one and two would tie in with my recollection of old fashioned tuning - bumpy cams and lumpy tickover....

If such a thing exists for the K engine what are you going to do about the ECU which is what actually controls how much you can 'rev up' to get the proposed power gains.

In both the short and long terms, it would be much cheaper to buy a Hyabusa although you won't get the quirky looks of the R  :)

A Suzuki B-king has quite a bit more power but, as British magazine RiDE tested the B-King and K1200R together and found that despite the extra power of the B-King, the K1200R was faster accelerating and had a 9 mph (14 km/h) higher top speed, maybe more power isn't everything.

From my days of tuning BMC Minis and Ford Escorts (misspent youth) the big problem with hot cams and more revs, which doesn't always yield more power, is that the other components between your new power and the road surface will all need beefing up to take the strain. The K clutch comes to mind as the first thing to let fly, or perhaps the cam-chain sprocket which is integral with the crank on the K12 and is not replaceable or upgradeable.

If you really need more than160-odd bhp there are any number of tuning forms who will happily grind you a set of cams but don't forget the electronics...

I could modify the existing cams and reprofile them but i need some information about the technical specs of the aftermarket ones so i can clone them.

ECU is not really a problem as long as i can reprogram the stock one and rev more (member elias has already done that).
If i have to disable the stock narrowband i can use a piggy back ecu as well, in every case the electronics is not a problem.

By the way, the cause that the K series motorbikes are "too fast" for their horsepower and weight is the lack of chain. (check a dynosheet)

Are there aftermarket bolt on cams for us?

For example, i can easily reprofile my stock cams to 296 degrees

I am thinking of a "200 whp" K12R.
It sounds pointless, idiotic maybe....

I like it.

When I get fed up with the performance of my bike I'll get in touch.

Now, now Tom. A hint of sarcasm I'm detecting there.  :)

I'm all in favour of fiddling and farkling around with bikes, if that's your poison. Be interesting to see what elias can get out of it. Keep us posted elias with your experiments.  ;)

If 200whp was just the target I would install nos.

I need just more power, maybe to a Kawasaki Zzr level or a tuned busa.

Pointless for most of our friends here
