BMW warranty - two small gotchas to be aware of
« on: May 10, 2018, 01:44:38 pm »
I didn't know this - but me and my thinner wallet do now!

1.
There are two types of BMW Motorrad warranty:
- BMW manufacturer's warranty (I believe this is the first 2 years from new)
- BMW 'used bike' warranty (the rest of the bike's life - what you are offered by the BMW dealer on used bikes, and what you can take out as an owner)

And of course there are 3 ways of buying your bike
- from a BMW dealer
- from a non-BMW dealer
- private sale

Combine those babies together, and there's a small but irritating gap in the 'used bike' warranty logic:
- if you buy from BMW they'll give you a 'used bike' warranty inclusive of price - 12 or 24 months
- if you buy privately, the 'used bike' warranty can be transferred over by the previous owner
- if you buy from a non-BMW dealer, the BMW 'used bike' warranty expires

2.
If you buy the warranty from BMW, the warranty doesn't kick in until 1 month after the warranty is taken out.
I waited 6 days after purchasing the bike before I worked out I wasn't covered, so when the non-BMW dealer's 30 day warranty expires, I have a 6 day gap before the newly purchased BMW one kicks in.

Those 6 days exactly match the Wrinklies run, so I'll be riding with no warranty. But nothing's going to go wrong. That all happened last year.  ;D ;D ;D

I thought the 2nd one, used bike warranty was different from the insured warranty... oui or ?

You mean these two?
- BMW manufacturer's warranty (I believe this is the first 2 years from new)
- BMW 'used bike' warranty (the rest of the bike's life - what you are offered by the BMW dealer on used bikes, and what you can take out as an owner)

I've only had the second variety. Can't speak for the first, but I'm sure someone else can.

Sorry Rich, I meant I thought there was a third. When you bought a used approved you got a 1 year or whatnot and after that you could take out the insured warranty.

Hm but after some internetting I can't back my own words up so... yeah it must have been a dream :D. I think where I was going wrong was that when I got my bike it had the remainder of the manufacturer warranty, which was what helped with getting the drive shaft and front bits corrosion things replaced. Ahem.

Although this looks new. Premium eh!
