Sluggish starting
« on: May 06, 2018, 08:02:10 am »
Hi gang
After trouble free motoring since fitting the motobatt she was abit reluctant to fire this morning normally first press and she’s up and running took two this morning then after 25 miles stopped for Petrol and again took two goes as first time not interested when I got to work tried her again and no problem so this one being a 2015 plate model does she still need an upgrade on the starter wiring? This is first time she’s been out in a couple weeks and I don’t used an optimate but I thought after 25 mile run she should have been ok

Hot start problems are as named - a first start from cold is never a problem.
Symptoms are inability to turn the motor over at all when warm (petrol station stop, fag break, etc).
For my bike, its not sluggish - chug chug chug chug chug - it just won't turn over, or it will turn over once / twice at most, and then clunk.

My fix (for the 3 or 4 times I've had it) is power off completely, count to 10 (that bit is for luck, capacitors to drain, short prayer, etc) power on, retry. That's never failed me. What has led to scary times is just trying again and again without switching the bike off, and grinding the battery down.

The powering off may just be my bike - other bikes may act differently - but it works for me.

So, in summary, if it's struggling from a cold start, it probably isn't the hot start issue.

Last bit: I believe the hot start fix is covered by warranty, if you can convince the dealer it's an issue. Since I have always got mine started, I haven't pushed for it.

Double check the terminal connections are tight Ady. Also put a multimeter across the battery terminals while starting, if the battery voltage falls below 9.6 volts while cranking, the battery is toast.

Hi Rich and Rae yep just checked the terminals and they are abit loose, something was in the back of my mind about this because I had a similar problem with me last one anyway gona take them out again and loctite them later, I’ve had the fuel filler screws start to undo before now but then on A and B roads I’m mainly in 3rd, 2nd for hairpins and occasionally 4th so the revs are up and exhaust growling so vibes are strong😁

Jeez! If my filler bolts came loose I'd set fire to the bugger and buy a Honda  ::)

You should never need thread lock on the battery terminal bolts. In fact mine are covered in grease and still don't come loose.

Mine flipped its lid once on a cold start. This was the first start after 3 months in a friend's garage immediately following last year's Wrinklies where I had the terminal( :)) dreaded hot start which killed the thing.

It had been on the Optimate all those months but when I wheeled it out and hit the button, it just chugged over. Get the kit off, find the car jump leads, take the battery cover off, try it one more time and it whipped into life. No logic to it at all.

Since then I have dumped a new Yuasa on it but haven't ridden it.

As Rich says, the hot start is just that.

As Rae says, get a cheap meter across the battery and report back.

Result you are up and running again, but if you don't have the hot start fix I would be tempted to ask the local BMW garage to fit it.  It really makes a difference when the engine it hot!  Peter

I had a "motobatt" battery and just did not run quite right. Same problems you are talking about. Swap out for normal battery and happy again. Also of note, is to start with thing were good then when down. I have not done much testing to prove 100%, but I will not be getting a motobatt  again.
