AAAAAARGGGHHHH MORE Insurance woes.....
« on: May 29, 2015, 06:36:40 pm »
My Insurance renewal is due at the end of the month....ebikes renewal quote...£568!....up from £200 and odd last year,(I though it was sub-£200 but I'd added the K so it bumped it up)..
Ho hum, gave them a call and asked for an explanation, after a long discussion they withdrew the offer anyway,as (a) I want business use cover on the KTM,and (b) the KTM,although registered in my name as the keeper and user,is actually owned by my company...strange thing is that there is nothing to prove who "owns" a vehicle...as it says on the V5,it is NOT proof of ownership...
So I approached the people who insure my haulage fleet, who spent ages on the phone sorting it out for me.
The net result is I'm covered on my current road-legal bikes, with business use on the Katoom...only £508..so,sort of a success...
BUT....I've got to fit a Thatcham approved immobiliser to the K1300GT ,because the BMW immobiliser is not Thatcham approved..ffs...AND....very strangely,I can't take a pillion on my KLR650...why I do not know as it's a trail bike with dual seat and passenger footrests...I mean,WTF is that all about?
I'm happy that I've got the cover, and  it's an Aviva Premier Bike policy...but what is it with these odd exclusions?
Lifes a bitch. And then you die.

.... they can and you pay; Simples!

Brian (who thinks the answer is as soon as they come up with an exclusion you don't like, you say goodbye and hang the phone up; that'll teach 'em)

You think that's bad

I filled in a quote for Carole Nash specifically marking unknown alarm and unknown immobiliser (as it didn't offer OEM factory fit

Just reading my policy docs (found in my spam folsde) and discovered that I have no theft cover unless I have a Thatcham approved alarm and immobiliser fitted!

They've given me 30 days to sort the K or I get the no theft cover on it.
I've booked this guy to come and fit mine:
https://bikealarmman.com/
I've not done business with him before so can't vouch for him,but he's got some good reviews and the price is reasonable

NO OEM alarm unit is ever possible to connect with ZDF unit.
Note am not saying that it wont work as an alarm module, just that it would never be possible to introduce it to ZDF a totally different thing.
I wonder if that insurance brand has some sort of contract with the alarm manufacturers and for that reason asks for this specific unit to be installed before offering premium coverage.

Thatcham, about a mile from where I live, don't actually make anything but are the leading test house in UK for vehicle safety and security.

Among many other things they do is to test and, certify and rate security locks, chains and alarms for the automotive industry.

http://www.thatcham.org

A 'Thatcham' alarm is merely one made by some other company that has been tested and certified by them.

Brian (whose mate went there on his very expensive mountain bike to see about a car repair and some low life knicked it while was inside; you couldn't make this stuff up)

Panic over after calling Carole Nash - it would seem I'm not the first to query this endorsement

What it really means is if I've stated I have a Thatcham 1 alarm then in the event of a theft claim I have to prior it, else no theft cove.

The very helpful girl managed to sell me insurance to cover my XS - for £35, my £500 XS is repaid in the event of a claim.

But I did have to pay an extra £26 because I'd claimed 9 years NCB but my renewal docs (from ebike) only showed 5. Arse!

It sounds like the German DEKRA certification organization, in that case the DEKRA documentation that covers OEM alarm should cover your insurance company requirements too.

They haven't specified a particular manufacturer or class of immobiliser,(they didn't mention an alarm, just an immobiliser)
Apparently the factory immob doesn't appear on their list of Thatcham approved devices-hence it is not acceptable to them.
The odd thing is that the KTM immob has not been Thatcham approved either,(the Dealer told me so!),but they accepted that one.
Anyway, the  bikealarmman recommended his best,(most expensive,natch),immob/alarm system,£299 fitted so not the end of the world but...well....I like things to be reasonably standard,to be honest....if theres any starting issues in the future, you can bet BMW will say it's the aftermarket bits that are the cause.

And it is always the aftermarket electronic bits that do cause the issue.
The OEM immobilizer passes US and Japan specs and does not for a certain company that sells insurance policies?
As said get them the documentation fm BMW for the immobilizer it comes with the bike, if not have the dealer print one for you and I assure you it covers their standards by far. As a matter of fact BMW has not approved thatcham organization (and any other worldwide) fm the moment they have DEKRA, and participate in ISO there was no need. As we go through it it smells more.
