MOT & tax - Catch-22 (almost)
« on: April 07, 2020, 12:24:32 pm »
I went to renew my road tax, brave sunlight upland optimist that I am.  8)

My MOT runs out on 29 April, i.e. end of the month.
The tax is due 30th April, so I need to get an MOT.

Ah, but there's an MOT extension of 6 months in the UK due to COVID-19, so I don't need one.

Hmm, but I can't get taxed without an MOT, and the gov.uk still shows 29th April MOT expiry.

Hmmm. Trapped!

Anyone else resolved this one?
(I have all of April to work it out, so no rush. I hoping the gov.uk MOT check will add 6 months, and hey presto.)

Rich, that link is for Northern Ireland where all the MOT test centres are run by the government. The bike shop in Wellesbourne is still open and they do MOTs, so it might be worth giving them a call.
Either that or wait and see if your MOT date extends itself when it gets to the expiry date.

Ah, silly me. You're quite right - I didn't spot the 'ni' in the URL.
Thanks for spotting that, Andy.

I'll remove the bad URL to avoid confusing others - and also conveniently covering my arse.  ;D

The correct info for mainland UK is here:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-mots-for-cars-vans-and-motorcycles-due-from-30-march-2020

And it gives me the the answer:
Your vehicle’s MOT expiry date will be automatically extended by 6 months if it’s eligible. This will be done just before it’s due to expire.

You could just have SORN’d it and ridden on regardless. Although Banbury'shire's two coppers are out looking for unnecessary travellers so I hear  ::)
