failed to start
« on: September 03, 2018, 08:42:53 pm »
Hi, can anyone give me some useful advice to my problem?
I had an issue the other day when i turned the key and there was no display on the lcd dash. Bike obviously wouldn't start. Turned off and back on again, it was ok and started.
2 days later i forgot about it and i went out for a ride and some brekky. On returning to the bike i turned the ignition and the display came up as normal but it failed to start or crank over. Played about with the start switch for a few attempts and it fired up.
Has been fine ever since but i am concerned it's going to leave me stranded at some point. I have ordered a new start switch and i will replace it anyway. Does anyone know why the display would not appear?  do you think these 2 symptoms are the same cause or have i got another issue? I have read about an antenna ring failure but thought this would display EWS. TIA

I would have your battery checked out these no maintenance batteries that replace the traditional lead acid batteries can do some funny things.

A couple of things, make sure the key is properly in the on position and not half and half, there have also been problems with the switch gear, which the dealer should sort out for you.

I had a similar problem when my bike cut out, luckily 100 yards from home. My issue was the lcd screen did not register the temp on the right and fuel level on the left ?
That was the right hand switch gear, and I had it replaced, problem solved.

You have three possibilities.

In order likelihood...

Most likely on current trends is the right hand switchgear.

Less likely but a possibility is the battery.

Least likely, because we haven't seen many, if any of these failures lately, is the immobiliser ring antenna.

The switchgear and the battery are a swap out job.

If you suspect the ring antenna then you can isolate the fault by using a second antenna module with the original still installed in the top yoke without having to strip it all apart.

I carry a spare ring antenna for this very purpose. Works with most BM's as long as you have the 'spare' ignition key with you as well as the original.

Cheers for the info. I will be replacing the right hand switchgear and hopefully, fingers crossed, this will be the end of the issue.
