Over 70's only!
« on: January 10, 2018, 08:17:30 pm »
Oi! I said over 70's only. Sod off...

Now that we have got rid of the children I have a question for you.

Assuming that a) you are still over 70, b) you had a full, car driving licence obtained sometime in your younger years and c) you are not a professional truck or bus driver, when the time came to renew your licence at age 70, did you opt to retain your entitlement to drive big'ish stuff and kill lots of OAP'S/school kids at one time? In other words, your C1 and D1 entitlement.

I haven't driven a seven and a half tonner for some years but nearly needed to last summer and have never driven a full-size bus since I left the RAF in the late ‘70’s.

However, the thought of giving up an entitlement fills me with dread. Firstly because it means I am getting old. Secondly because you just never know. Thirdly it is an ENTITLEMENT!

Just wonderin'  8)

I would think that anybody who might consider employing you would want some kind of reference.
And don't you have to have regular medicals to drive the big stuff and PSV's? They would surely want to see the results of the last one.
Maybe even a test of some sort to see if you were able.
Also insurers have a say who can and cannot drive.
Worth keeping your entitlement just in case it might be needed, even if it was one upmanship in the pub on who is licenced to drive the biggest variety of vehicles.

Its not always the destination that counts its the ride, having a destination just stops you going round in circles.

It's only the C1, D1 entitlement Ron, not HGV etc. Anyone who passed their test way back when, got C1, D1 automatically. More recent licences do not include C1, D1.

C1, D1 allows the holder to drive minibuses up to 16 seats and medium size goods vehicles (3,500 - 7,500 Kg [3.5 to 7.5 tons]).

Without C1, D1 you can still drive anything below 3.5 tons (which includes Luton head Transits etc) and minibuses with up to 8 seats for your own use and as a 'volunteer' (for club outings etc).

If you choose to keep C1, D1 then you do need a special medical form filled in by a doctor and/or optician. This will obviously entail some cost.

As long as you have the C1, D1 entitlement you can hire 7.5 tonners with ease.

When I was going to do the house move myself, a 7.5 tonner was the obvious choice and all the local hire firms had them available at reasonable cost but they were in high demand from small companies and bigger couriers.

This sums up the situation nicely...
