Title: Who do you reckon will be the first member to get the Covid jab...
Post by: Phmode on January 06, 2021, 12:36:27 pm
...or has someone already been stung?

We have a reasonably diverse demographic apart from females and BAME's.

OK, we don't have a very diverse demographic...

But, nonetheless, who do we reckon might be first among equals. As a Septuagenarian, I'm about mid-Feb I reckon although the old Asthma might bring it forward a little, gasp, gasp  ::)

I reckon Ron is up there with the super-wrinklies and a great chance of taking the pot for the first although he is of course, fit as a flea.

Anyone else like to take a punt at when they might get it?

Brian (who is having a slow day in Phmode Hovel stuffing logs in the old burner and betting on how long each will last  :) )

don't put any money on me.
i'll just wait and see. i think give the two doses as designed to high risk people, the rest of us can wait it out.
my thoughts anyway. i certainly wouldn't stop anyone getting it if they wanted but equally i don't want to be forced into it.
usually there's a row now.

Apart from cleaning the bikes in 0° temps there is not much to do (and I ain't going out to do that). Of course I could take the Xmas decorations down or polish the silver or shave me head but the excitement od having just beaten myself at Poker on the laptop has made me come over all giddy...

Those who need it most only need the one dose initially and it's more important to get it into the most arms possible in the shortest times possible. Every second dose given at 21 days is a first dose not given to someone else.

The big problem with lower risk folks not getting it when it is offered is that they can become asymptomatic positives and turn into super spreaders.

Anyway, drinking bleach works just as well  :o

My Mother (86) had hers this morning (the Pfizer vaccine) and only received the call yesterday, so perhaps best not to expect too much notice.

If I got a call from the doctor at 3 in the morning telling me to have my jab at 4 I'd be there like a rat up a drainpipe.
As things stand at the moment the first four groups are supposed to be vaccinated by the 15th February and I am in group 5 so I hope to be jabbed shortly thereafter.

You're right Rae. For those of us who are mobile...

They can send the surgery cleaner to stick needles in my eyeballs (or any other balls they fancy) as long as I get a trillion anti-bugs inside me.

I know my politics are only slightly to the right of Attila the Hun but seeing idifots in Parliament square protesting about their bloody civil liberties being infringed  >:( ; there are some bits of their anatomy I would like to infinge. Try discussing civil liberties with Melanie if she is at the front end of this shite and I look forward to reading her edited response.

As for eejits taking photos in empty hospital corridors claiming this 'proves' that the NHS is NOT at breaking point...and therefore the whole epic thing is a conspiracy.

Mid to late May for me. Hey ho.

My 89 year old Mum and 90 year old Dad have heard nothing yet - whereas my 80/85 year old in-laws had theirs 2 weeks ago, and the second is due v soon.
(Even though they aren't doing seconds, but that's what they've been told.)

So it's not an even spread - maybe it's biased towards towns/cities as opposed to my rural parentals?

F**k the anti-vax bs.  I'll snaffle whatever comes first, even Trumps Drain-ex. It can't come quick enough for me, 61 with high inflammatory markers (arthritis) and living in a house full of super-spreaders in the form of a school teacher and four teenagers. No wonder I travel by bike when I can, the ultimate form of self-isolation.

As I work with the NHS I've been told I can go into the office in London at any point and get mine. I'm more than happy to get the jab and will arrange an office visit in the next week or so.

While I agree mostly with Brian I do have a degree of sympathy with those protesting in Parliament Square. Firstly, as motorcyclist who, statistically, are a high risk group (for non-COVID reasons) I think we need to be careful of berating a "selfish" minority who have different views/priorities to the majority. Those in glass houses ...

Secondly, no one should under estimate the impact of the lock-down on the economy, on the mental state of the nation and on the fabric of life that we have. There are people who are literary losing everything they have worked for. The future (post COVID is going to be really hard for the next 15 to 20 years. We are in the worst economic situation ever outside of war times. We will have HUGE debts and a massively reduced economy with which to generate the income to pay for it. To quote a (rather extreme but making the point) American who was in a news report a couple of months ago, "there's no point in surviving the virus if we're all going to starve to death"!

Finally, while I don't have the statistics, I would expect that the deaths of under 25's due to road accidents since March, even with lock-down, are significantly greater than deaths of under 25's due to COVID. If we were under 25, it would very reasonable to think that life was definitely being restricted for the benefits of someone else.

Went for my jab yesterday  :), was the Pfizer one.
Arm just feels a bit bruised this morning, but no other side effects.

This was the result of some inside info from a rellie who works in the local A&E.

She had been advised about another hospital that had a surfeit of the vac & not enough people arranged to administer it to.
I think the Pfizer vac has a short life span once removed from the freezer & mixed up for injection.

So had to go at short notice on a 40 mile drive & get jabbed.
But with this new virus strain running rampant, the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned.

If we were under 25, it would very reasonable to think that life was definitely being restricted for the benefits of someone else.

All your points are (probably, cos as you say, no statistics) correct and the loss of livelihoods and jobs is catastrophic and unbearable.

However, far as I know, US chapters of Hells Angels aside, motorcyclists only pose a threat to themselves, not to society at large. I imagine that very few in here have ridden for pleasure this last year when told to stay home. I don't recall the bike rags ranting on about the restrictions to our civil liberties and I imagine (no involvement and no evidence) that the Blood Bikes have been run ragged; I bet they did nothing but whinge and whine about that...

As someone who willingly gave up almost all of his civil liberties between the ages of 16 and 30 in the name of the greater good and for the benefit of all of the someone elses (as opposed to my good as I would knowingly have been at ground zero if it all went tits-up), I find a 'stay at home unless you have a valid reason to go out' order a very minor inconvenience when the country is at war.

With this latest strain of the virus, more and more critically ill patients in London's hospitals are now from lower age group and this seems to be the pattern spreading out across the country. Maybe they will re-think the importance of this minor restriction to their civil liberties if they or one of theirs gets ill or dies from this hideous virus.

I've never heard anyone on the news say 'Yeah, my mum died from Covid but it was worth it for me to be able to exercise my civil liberties!'

For anyone who has never suffered from a lung disorder, the only way to describe the feeling of terror at your impending end is to hold a pillow tightly to your face and then try breathing. Doing it for an hour should give you a fair idea. I sat beside my grandfather as he died from emphysema long before I was diagnosed with late onset asthma. I can remember the look of sheer terror, exhaustion and pleading on his face to this day; and this from a man who fought in the trenches in the Great War and was shot, gassed, bombed and shelled (by his own side) and never once complained about the restrictions to his civil liberties.

These selfish protestors should spare a thought for those key workers who have given up and continue to give up, their civil liberties for almost a year now with no let up, no complaints, no time off in many cases and virtually no rewards. They are the ones who should be marching on parliament but it isn't in the nature of 'givers' only in the nature of 'takers'.

Brian (who is obviously getting really, really grumpy because he can't go out partying anymore  >:( )

PS Congratulations Philip, it seems like you win the honour of our first jabee, albeit through stealth and the obvious logistical problems associated with a seriously life-compromised vaccine  :)

fair play phillip, i don't know the official stance but i still think you should use any inside info to get the booster...simply does not make sense not to. just my opinion mind but you'll be doing well to change my mind.
i think the motorcycle thing was to keep down accidents so hospitals would have one thing less to worry about.
that said i've been in a and e a couple of times this week and it was great!! no drunk ballixs wandering about slabbering, no drugged up gits hancuffed to police and no family gatherings in to keep the dla right. doctors and nurses although busy had time to check patients over and seemed to be in a good frame of mind.
there are no good stories about covid, has to be a horrible death, i know more that have died from not looking about themselves than actual covid, a death is a death and the nearer home it hits , the worse it is.
i have a number of medical workers in the family , different ranks different disciplines and they can't agree so i'm not going to try and sway anyone. i volunteer with some special needs lads and when asked my opinion by one of the parents i was able to reply that i did not have to live with the consequences of her actions, she did, as i do with mine.
so wash yer hands stay away from me and most of all don't lose sleep over what you can't control.

As said Brian, I agree with much of what you have said but I still have sympathy for the protesters.

The under 25's are not a threat to society either. IF (and it's a very big if) they are carrying a virus then the virus is the threat. All are being treated as a threat when, in reality, it's actually a very small proportion that might be. Less than 5% if the "official estimated infection rate" is to be believed. So, like the moves to remove motorcycling from society (being achieved through complex and expensive testing choking of the supply of new bikers), the under 25 group in particular, is being locked-down to protect it from itself.

I'll point out that you willingly chose to give up your civil liberties, and received a good wage in the process.  That's very different to being told you have to give up your civil liberties and that you'll have to survive on Universal Credit if you're entitled to it. I personally know of 3 under 25's who have had their own business for less than two years, have worked really hard to get the business going, invested everything they had in the business, but are now f**ked because they're not entitled to a single penny. That really is a very bitter pill to swallow.

I've never heard anyone say my Mum died of anything but it was worth it to protect our civil liberties, but I have heard it said that many died so that we can have these civil liberties therefor, they are worth protecting, ultimately, with peoples lives if that is deemed necessary. (Which I don't think it is at the moment but I don't deny the right of others to think differently.)

I am very aware as someone rapidly approaching retirement, financially comfortable and looking forward to a reasonably comfortable pension, I can "take the hit", at least in the short term. Lot's of people are in a very different position, where financial uncertainty is likely to be perceived as as much of a risk to health and well being as COVID.

As someone who works with the NHS and is married to a practicing nurse, who is also a department manager in the local hospital, I am all to aware of the pressures on key workers. However, the pressures on other elements of society may be different, but they are no less intense.

And ...

Congratulations Philip.

Try to keep your blood as cold as possible between now and then, seeing as it's more than the 21 day thing :P

With all this protesting stuff, the American turn of events has somewhat reminded me that a small number of people (and their algorithms) are extremely adept at manipulating masses of people. Be it 85 years ago or for the last 4 years. None of us are immune to that, because we're human. I hope we can find a 21st century solution to this problem.

My wife and I  both got letters from London this week, telling us to get a flu jab. So SWMBO phones up the surgery. Whats your name? Where do you live? Hmm. We'll put you on the list. Put us on the list ? Been registered there for 14 years and both over 60 and we are not on the flu jab list? WTF?

Anyway, the receptionist/nurse/ whatever then said they'd stopped everything to get ready for Covid jabs. Oh right so when are we getting those then? Don't pester us with enquireies you'll be contacted when its your turn. Oh, and we haven't had any vaccine delivered anyway. Umm. So not even on the list for flu and you'll tell me when ts my turn? Not holding my breath

So SWMBO, not to be put off, rings around the pharmacies today for a flu jab. One doesn't answer, one has no vaccine, one in Truro has a bit and might be able to jab us. So next stage, what are the facilities eg one in one out, one way system with separate entrance and exit, well ventilated location? Er , none of the above. This time it was us that said don't call us we'll call you

(https://i.ibb.co/qscGgK9/FB-IMG-1591608203786.jpg) (https://ibb.co/G28wMyk)

Anyway, opened a new bottle of Tamnavulin and by 11pm probably will have ceased to bother

I asked the nurse if everyone had kept their appointment, she said everyone did but one was late.
So all the confusion out there about not getting second jabs didn't apply in my area of Welwyn Garden City, thankfully.

I need to be clear. No-one, especially me, is moaning about the younger elements of society having a whinge and a moan and I would be up in arms (careful here, seeing as the US almost is) were I in their position. I haven't seen or heard of any of those who have been totally disenfranchised, breaking the law and gathering in groups and protesting.

I am having a go at those who are actively breaking the law and gathering in groups in Parliament Square and elsewhere to protest, not about the hardship and suffering, but about not being allowed to gather in groups and protest. That is the 'civil liberties' they are protesting about. And they should be shot, as Attila would say. Despite gunpowder not having been invented yet  :)

Again. I agree in the main but I'm even more cynical than I was previously about the "presentation" of such events by the media and how much of the protest is as "illegal" as is suggested. My step daughter is 25 and appeared on the London local TV news a one of the law breaking revelers on New Years Eve. She and her two house mates walked into town, partially as exercise and paritailly to relieve the boredom. She said there were other people there but everyone was being well behaved and all were observing social distancing until ... the police started "kettling" them into one small area, which is where she was filmed. They didn't want to be that close to others but were given no choice.

The police kept them all kettled for over an hour before letting them out a few at a time.

Should they have been out? Possibly not! Was it the crime of the century? I'll let you decide! Were they a danger to others? Definitely not until they were forced into a position where they had to stand shoulder to shoulder with strangers. What was shown to the public? A group of inconsiderate, selfish no-goods!

If only she had chosen to drive to Barnard Castle instead!!!

Well they were pretty good at beating discipline into new recruits after the war started I think :P.

In actuality they found in ww1 that many of the poor buggers in the trenches weren't very motivated to fight as they had nothing to fight for. It was one of the motivations for the start of council House building in 1919. Give people something to fight for :).

I like history :).

Anyway, my mother has some complicated autoimmune thing going on as a result of the 70's approach to solving hay-fever, so she can't have the jab. At least not until they're more confident on side effects.

Had my second jab 7th Jan 2021. They said they decided to carry on as planned and fulfil all appointments.
My cousins daughter works as a GP nurse in North Yorkshire and she had the job or organising all the jabbing. They had the prospect of notifying 1000 people their second jab is cancelled. They worked out that the time and hassle of doing that just wasn't justifiable so they carried on with the second jabs.
Another two weeks and I hope to be Covid proof, whether I can become a carrier is unknown so life will carry on much the same me.

Interesting because even with 2 jabs their only talking 85% against catching it again...

If you were going to buy a bike and they said reliability was 85% would you buy it...oh hang on I bought a K  >:(
Title: Re: Who do you reckon will be the first member to get the Covid jab...
Post by: richtea on January 13, 2021, 11:02:23 pm
The point about the 85% figure is that the R number then comes down way below 1.0, and therefore your 15% chance of catching it is vastly reduced because instead of ~200k+ people being infective there will only be a few thousand. And statisically you'd be very unlucky to meet them.

The second bonus is the hospitals will no longer be full, so you'll get top NHS support, should you be unlucky enough to catch it.

And in terms of being a carrier, Ron, you won't be any more dangerous than an unvaccined person - or the vaccine would be doing more damage than good.
But you're right, you'll probably have to keep doing the mask & distancing, if only to stop naffing the rest of the country off!

My logic says once the vulnerable and NHS staff are vaccinated (plus 10-14 days), the lockdown will ease because the death rate will drop right down. But we've got about 1-2 more weeks of horrendous death rates - the Xmas 'gift' - before things look slightly less scary. March I reckon - but start or end of?

Good words young man. But it gave me a horror flash forward to morons going about without masks shouting "I'm fine I've had the jab!" and ensuing punchups. And ultra annoying repeated news articles about it.

Correct - in terms of numbers/risk, vaccinated people could go around maskless with little risk to themselves or others.
But that would open a whole kettle of unshipped Scottish fish.

Oh, and then anti-vaxxers would then pretend they've had the vaccine and go maskless.

So we're all in it together but the end of the tunnel is in sight now, and it looks like this (in my lockdown head):

That’s complete Bxxxxxs, the jab means If/When you catch it the systems are drastically reduced, if you have seen what has been said on the box today, current info the effects of jab may only last 6 month or maybe less.

Out of the tunnel....can’t even see the friggin light at the end....we are a long way from getting out of jail, hence why the government is shitting themselves cuz this dumb population thinks the jab is a license to run a mock.

If you mean can we expect to have an annual Covid jab as well as a flu jab, then yes, I'd expect that.

But in 6 month's time, we'll be back down to low thousands or even just hundreds of positive tests. Stress ye not. Well, stress until March, but too much - it's bad for the ticker.

Rae, no side affect unless "too lazy to get off my arse and do something useful" counts. We were supposed to sit down in the waiting room for 15 minutes, I lasted about three before I went home.
As I understand the Pfizer jab, the fist gives 52% protection, the second after three weeks raises that to 95% after a further three weeks. As I think I said before I carry on as usual wearing a mask in doors and distancing and obeying the rules as I don't know if I can still spread it. And as has been said I don't want to give ideas to others out there for getting around the rules.
I heard on the radio that it might well be and annual one like the flu jab and wouldn't be surprised if they were combined into one vaccination.

As stated in the BMJ:

Alongside asymptomatic infections, another secondary outcome of the trial was prevention of severe disease. The paper found that, from 21 days after the first dose, 10 cases of patients being admitted to hospital for covid-19 were reported, all of which were in the control arm. Two of these cases were classified as severe, including one death.

And I wouldn't recommend getting the jab in the "complete Bxxxxxs"!!! ;)

Today's stat:
'More people in Britain were reported dead of Covid-19 in a day today than died on the roads in a year in 2019.'

1820 Covid-19 deaths versus 1752 died in road traffic accidents last year.
And everyone worries about fast cars & motorbikes.

Stay safe, as they say, and keep hanging on for another month or so. It will be worth it.

As many of you know, my wife is a nurse and a senior manager at our local hospital. Her view is to not get too hung up on the "number" of COVID deaths but to wait for the figures that show actual vs. expected deaths. That'll be a better measure of the real impact of COVID.

The reason for this is, for example,, they had a cancer patient who tested COVID positive but was completely asymptomatic. That patient had a massive fatal heart attack related to their cancer treatment, nothing to do with COVID. Another situation was a patient who suffered a brain hemorrhage and died, again having tested positive but were asymptomatic.

Both of those were reported as COVID deaths but neither had anything to do with COVID.

Using government statistics is probably more dangerous than riding a motorcycle! ;)

Isn't it about if the covid can be a "contributing factor"? Which I assume in all cases as you mention above could be blagged? I get the point though, it's running total deaths now compared to same time 2 years ago.
Title: Re: Who do you reckon will be the first member to get the Covid jab...

You're right - comparing 2020 deaths versus say the 5 year average is the way to go. Here's the comparison (https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/weekly-all-cause-mortality-surveillance-2020-to-2021):
- look at the 'Weekly all-cause mortality surveillance week 3 (2021) report'

Note the massive spike in April-May 2020. Normal death rate per week is 9-10k. With Covid in April it was 21k. That was double normal death rates, but it came back to normal during the summer.
We're now in the new spike building in December, and we're topping the April one, but it's not on the graph yet.

Although you'd think so that's not this case. The measure of "COVID deaths" is about people who die within 28 days of a positive COVID test, regardless what they actually die of. You'd be a COVID death if you got run over on the way home to isolate having just formally tested positive.

The problem with your 'problem with the stats' statement David, is that the number of excess deaths is a figure which in normal years is over and above a huge and frightening number of influenza deaths as well as deaths from all other causes.

With the various lockdowns, I 'imagine' that the number of deaths from influenza (which is nowhere near as transmissable as Covid and for which many people have the jab every year) is much lower this year than in a normal year because folks are wearing masks, not going out except to illegal raves and are social distancing, all of which help to stop the spread of the 'flu and hence makes the excess deaths figure seem lower than it will actually be for this year. Your wife would surely know the stats on current 'flu death rates assuming she has the spare brain capacity to even wonder about such things whilst currently doing 487% of her normal job and probably that of three other people who are off sick. Much hero worship going on here...

I was shocked and horrified last year when the 'normal' figures for deaths from 'flu came out, something we don't normally hear anything about. OK, most of those 'flu deaths are merely the annual cull of the old and decrepit who would probably die soon anyway from other unrelated causes like old age, but the statistics are still scary.

As whoever it was once said, 'there are lies, damn lies and statistics'.

But I totally agree that we shouldn't obsess about any of it. I'm currently panicking because Waitrose has run out of rib-eye steak and has no stock of 2litre bottles of Yeo Valley milk 8)

You are 100% right Brain with regards to flu deaths. I think it was 2017 that was a "bad year" and the numbers from then give COVID a run for it's money, at least for the 6 months to June 2020.

And yes, flu deaths are down this year as a result of COVID measures but, I suspect, a number of the COVID deaths would have been flu victims this year had they not been doing the COVID distancing shuffle.

Likewise, there will be a number of deaths this year that will be a result of a lack of or delayed treatment due to COVID. There will be no recording of COVID in these deaths but without COVID some of those people would still be walking around. (And I don't mean zombie style!)

An interesting thought on all of this with regards to the NHS.

Of the who pandemic, there is only one part that has been wholly organised by the NHS, without any real government interference. The vaccination programme.

Just over a month in since vaccines have been available in volume, and in England alone, almost 2.5m jabs are happening per week. That's from a service that has had almost a year of being stretched way beyond it's capacity, and a service that came into the pandemic with over 40,000 nursing vacancies.

The NHS is often a target for unfair criticism (and some fair criticism) but, when "it hit the fan", the NHS really has delivered. Well done to them all.

Just got my letter from a 12 year old in Russia who claims on behalf of the NHS that I should go online and book mine. It can't be genuine because they weren't asking for any money or bank details...

And as for the NHS? Well overpaid and underworked if you ask me....

I really don't know where the knocks come from apart from when there is a huge cock-up when it is fully justified as in the almighty review at Salford Royal following my mum's on-ward treatment following brialliant emergency tratment and a wonderful life-saving operation.

I was born just before the NHS came into being. They saved my life when I was about 2 years old and had an enormous abcess on a gland in my throat. They didn't kill me when they took my tonsils out at 12, although one young lad in my batch didn't make it through the folowing night. They saved my knee joint following my only mototcycle accident at 16. They have been there every time I needed them down the following 58 years and I have no idea how they do it. Or why really!

The young lady who took blood etc. prior to me seeing the consultant with my knackered wrists last January said her sister (sibling, not senior) earned more that her stacking shelves at the Morrisons supermarket over the road from Hereford General where she worked. No training, no qualifications, no responsibilities, no unpaid overtime and also no desire to get shit on by one and all at every turn.

Heros every last one. But they still won't get a pay a rise.

PS The 12 year old in Russia came through, both appointments booked at Boots and it only cost me £2,345. Each... :)

Was listening to a professor of immunology the other day and he said there was a research project in UK looking at a second but different jab. Essentially first jab kick starts your immune system and the second jab bumps it up. However there's a well known effect in which a second jab of a similar vaccine has a much greater effect than a second jab of the same vaccine. So AZ + Moderna may be the golden ticket.  Failing that, we could always start humming this in public https://youtu.be/e-X1X766vAY

being involved in a lot of NHS virtual meetings, there's a fair bit of "compare your side effects" discussion. Anecdotal evidence suggests that neither is better or worse than the other. Whichever jab you have, most appear to be OK but some have some noticeable side effects.

My mother has a buggered immune system thanks to those jabs in the 70s for dealing with hayfever that instead killed a bunch and messed everyone else up. So she's waiting to hear what the doctors suggest. She's allergic to pretty much every medicine and half the food in the world!

Not far off - about 430k per day, when averaged. It climbs through the week, which I suspect is a lag effect from the previous weekend's figures being delivered late.

It's been just over a week since I had my vaccine and apart from a slight discomfort around the injection sight after a few hours I have had no side effects whatsoever.
