Should I walk away?
« on: November 12, 2020, 04:52:01 pm »
I'm looking at buying a k1300s from a dealer, it had a valve cover oil leak which has been repaired today with new gaskets (the Rocker cover gasket, interior plug gasket, plugs and o-rings). But the mechanic that took it for a test ride earlier found that getting it into 4th and 5th gear was difficult - he seems to think that the selector rod might be bent? I'm not convinced, wouldn't that affect all the gears? could it be the quickshifter or clutch issues? it's got 48000 miles on it - ex police bike.
I think I already know the answer, but just checking ;)
Thanks

Correct, of course you know the answer!

Unless it's so cheap you can afford the cost of an overhaul.
But why have the hassle - there are plenty others out there.

i didn't register that it was from a dealer....why can't he fix it, it would have to be breaker money which he won't do...

How long ago was it "ex-police", not long I would guess by the 48k mileage, they're usually well ridden and maintained, either it was sold from the plod for some specific reason ( write-off / gearbox gone ? ) or it's been abused since it was police ?
I'd say "walk away" on the face of it, but on the other hand some pertinent questions about it's provenance and service history might possibly land you a heavily discounted bargain ... just a thought.
Maybe, just maybe, there isn't anything wrong with it that a service and a few vigorous miles might cure ? Have a good long test ride yourself, couldn't do any harm ?
On balance "walk" but I'd be curious  ?

Dare we ask the price?

I'd say a 48k bike should be around £3.5 - £4.5k depending on age, spec & condition.
Take away, say £1.5k for unknown gearbox horrors, and you're down around the £2-3k.

There's a 2 owner one on Autotrader for £3.5k, for example. At 30k miles:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/bike-details/202010044587815?sort=price-asc&advertising-location=at_bikes&radius=1501&make=BMW&postcode=de30sg&model=K1300S&include-delivery-option=on&page=1

It even has panniers. Sell them if you don't need them, and get another £200 back.
Part service history though - that's worth checking first.

Then take the stickers off and sell those... Oh wait they're worthless tat!

At least he can't say "never ridden in the rain" as he's taken pictures in the rain! Back side of headlights wiring isn't OEM is it? So something hopefully better. And is that a badly stuck on headlight protector? Sorry, I'm in a judgy mood. Also house keys on the bike key ring so the yoke will be nicely scratched. Oh and a dick illegal (garage isn't called "and so it begins" is it?) plate!

Poor little bike! I wonder what was beginning. Some sort of crisis I reckon.

Rusty bolts.
Missing screw on topbox clear tray/cover.
Odd power cable fitted into left top fairing cover.

But hey, no one said it was pristine. Not at that price.
[EDIT: actually he claims the condition is 'fantastic' in the ad. Which is true, it is utter fantasy.]

Rusty Bolts. Didn't he invent the steam powered cabbage strimmer?
