K1200 / K1300 Forum / Re: Brake woes
« on: March 17, 2024, 10:48:31 pm »
A tip to improve the front brake is to park the bike on the side stand with the steering fully to the left. Pump the brake lever and tie it back to the handlebar. Leave overnight. I use a cycling toe strap to pull the brake lever back to the bar.

Supposedly air in the system migrates upwards to exhaust out through the fluid reservoir which is the highest point.

Works on mountain bike hydraulic front brakes as well.

I use a Montana 600 with OS mapping.

I plotted the routes on Basecamp.

Looks fun! Forgive my ignorance but what shows that one of these is toast? Is it when you fiddle with it and find it not moving? Or is it a visual inspection of something having failed?
Take it apart and it will be obvious if it needs replacing.
After cleaning and greasing, fit the pivot pin and it should rotate freely and smoothly.

Good trip report Matt.

Has it made you want to get yourself a 1300?

I think that the headers need to be bolted to a cylinder head while the welding is done. This should stop the flanges at the head from moving out of line.

They probably buy it, try it and frighten themselves.

Take the screen off and go for a ride. You'll be amazed at how quite it is.

Hi Miguel and welcome. Where in Portugal are you?
How about Vila do Conde?

Is there play in the rear wheel or is there a big run out at the rim. Two entirely different problems. It's not clear from your description.

All this fuss about removing the oil filter.

It's going to be epic when you come to replace the spark plugs or adjust the valve clearances.

These filters can be cleaned out by blowing through with an air line from the inside.

With regard to the body bound rivet, it's removed by pushing the centre of the rivet through which allows the claw, outer parts, to reduce in diameter and the fixing can then be removed. Sometimes the centre of the rivet has a lip and it can then be pulled out rather than pushed through. The fun then is reassembling the rivets to refit them. That is if you haven't lost the centre part.
