Is this oil fine for the task at hand?

Yes, pop it in and enjoy. (Still talking about the oil here)
No, I wouldn’t fry chips in that muck

Well it wasn’t to save a few quid, I asked if it was good value as I wasn’t sure regarding the overall
Cost of the package, air filters, oil filter etc, was this expensive, was this cheap rubbish?
I have to say I’m not a huge believer in the hype that BMW may spew out regarding having to use their
own oils etc and I must confess I’m genuinely surprised by the negativity towards using anything else.
Like what was said earlier, I thought N N was the place to go, I thought you chaps would have been doing that for years.
My original post was just a peace of mind and hoping others would say ‘yes, always use that place’ or get it from here instead.
Whilst I certainly wouldn’t ‘Cheap out’ I also won’t pay £10 for something that’s £5 next door.
This purchase was based on a pre existing kit that was available for the machine I have, sold by two company’s that specialise in BMW products, and list this oil as a product for the bike in question. ‘Nippy and Motoworks’.

I think the worry (from historical posts on this forum, and its predecessor), is the clutch problem. Hence why people throw their hands up in horror.

However, much like the 'Don't buy a 1200 if you can afford a 1300!' argument, not every bike/clutch/etc has problems.
As you know, forums attract both 'I love my bike' and 'I've got a problem' members in equal measure. No one joins because its just an average motorbike!
I'm sure many people have used other oils, and we hear nothing (problems or otherwise).

Silkolene is a trusted & well-known brand. Give it a go, and let us know. It enriches the forum, and we'll all be the wiser.

Blimey boys if you lot are going to waffle on at least add some history too the thread.....

From September 04 to 2010 the oil spec was 10/40 the clutch had been an issue for years so you 1300 owners don’t get all sniffy because even that had been around long enough to also have a problem.

In an attempt to sort the clutch problem BM started to suggest!!!! 5/40 in 2010 the then problem was the camchain rattle at start up because the tensioner would not hold 5wt oil,BM then did the recall upgrade which included 1300’s and also added the jump guard which in reality is a solid block of plastic and by 2011 5/40 was set in stone.

As i’ve said before Vines volunteered to fix mine(clutch)so clearly their were other things going on apart from oil, first attempt lasted 6 weeks the second has lasted 10 years.

As for oil,i’m Certainly not going into the Pros and cons of how my supplies turn up on my door step but i’ve Used both Silkolene 5/40 and the BM option and unable to tell the difference I haven’t asked the bike  :)

For 1200 owners the upgraded camchain tensioner is black.

For 1200 owners the upgraded camchain tensioner is black.

I'm fairly certain my K12S tensioner was black also.

The easy giveaway is that the original tensioner had a vertical, cylindrical portion about 1" tall whereas the later tensioner is about 2" tall. You can find it hiding under the frame rail on the right about 6" in front of the leading edge of the clutch housing.

Well the new oil went in yesterday, new oil filter, new air filter.
Final drive oil changed, and I’ve done a nice little 100 mile ride today.
The bike ran as smooth as butter, 1’st gear engagement doesn’t sound like someone throwing a bag of spanners into another bag of spanners anymore.
And before I changed the oil I ran the bike with a decibel meter on the workbench, then did the same after, and it’s a whole 3.3dB quieter too.
I’m going to check my gentleman sausage shortly, as I reckon that has gained an inch also!

So all in all, I say Great Success 🙌🏼

Silkolene Pro 4, I salute you.

And my local BMW service guy uses

CASTROL POWER1 RACING 4T 5W-40  €14 a litre.

So far, after two years and two services, not a problem.  I just did the third one myself with the same oil.

About to buy some service parts from Nippy Normans but their oil filter recommendation confuses me. For the K1300s they spec the Mahle OC306. However, Mahle's own catalogue and also Opie Oils both specify the OC619 filter.  Does anyone know which is correct.
