Title: Ball joints
Post by: Gingerchunkyboy on May 11, 2021, 08:30:21 pm
I'm just about to change my ball joints for the second time at 70000 miles i was wondering do people ever change the top and bottom trailing arms aswell . Do they ever wear out or will just replacing the ball joints take out all the play.

It depends where the play is. If there is play in a ball joint then change that ball joint.

It is important to pin point exactly where the play is before any work is undertaken. With the front wheel off the ground and the wheel carrier pushed to and fro, it is easy for the worn joint to be isolatedby feeling at each joint for play.

A two man job. One to rock to and fro and the other to feel at each joint.

In the early days, ball joints were changed in pairs. It didn't seem right to me and using the above method, I changed only one ball joint on my bike and sorted the problem.

Had the whole front end dismantled on the 100k K12S and some of the bearings were replaced together with a secondhand (18k mile) front shock. That has completely rejuvenated the front end. The ball joints have only been replaced once.

...and when you think that both of mine were replaced at 18,000 miles.

And then again at 18,800... :adolf:

took the front end apart today , removed the ball joints and on the top joint stripped threads https://photos.app.goo.gl/HYh8p13vBSP3Joj26 https://photos.app.goo.gl/2d47zN1Uq5AkaCfm8
also most of the paint came of https://photos.app.goo.gl/a74GGFAUA4qGew4a9 . Ordered a new on from BMW £882 plus the £292 already spent on replacement ball joints also the top trailing link bearings are shot , and if im replacing them i might aswell replace the lower trailing link bearings so another £144 to the bill . She looks a sorry state all stripped down https://photos.app.goo.gl/Gy5gotQUMT11PeBv7 . On the bright side at least the front shock isn't leaking.

Take a EuroKClub merit point for posting photos first time, you wouldn't believe the trouble some people have.

Aah the thread stripping is why BMW had to replace my front bit too, but obviously not at my cost. 800, flipping heck!

That top ball joint thread in the wheel carrier looks like it has been bashed with something.

In 30 years time, folks will be lusting after the K half out of sight, with a massive old school petrol engine, analogue clocks, and an Akro.

(Note to Akropovic: you are going to need a new business model - and very soon.)

in 30 years time I'm not sure that's the case as getting an paying for the petrol is likely to be challenging.

Is it just an iPad thing? All I get are large outlines with no piccies inside...

And the second time Bahnstormer did mine they knackered the threads but BMW stumped up the then £400'odd for the wheel carrier seeing as I had paid full price for the original ball-joints...

Bike doesn't look bad for 70k miles.  Do you think the threads stripped due to seizure?

Think I'd have been tempted to get a second hand fork ("wheel carrier").  There are usually tons out there on eBay.  I've also been wondering about having it anodised as the plastic coating they use is OK at first but once salt water gets under the edges (and they seem to leave edges everywhere) it creeps and does what's happened on yours (mine doesn't look as bad but probably is underneath).  I had a decent result on my frame where I'd had the side-stand lugged tigged back on, by using Upol Raptor etching primer for difficult surfaces + RS Bike Paints Asphalt Grey + their lacquer

I had to replace my ball joints at 36K miles, and again at 72K miles. Now at 130K and doing okay. You guys and the corrosion in the UK is really nasty. Sorry to see that. If I know the locals have salted the roads I do not go out until several days of rain have happened.  I buy my parts from Wunderlich and they are half the price of OEM ball joints. But that was 5 years ago.
