This linkage sits in an area forward of the rear wheel and collects all the road dirt thrown off the rear wheel. The four sets of needle roller bearings should be cleaned out regularely and packed with clean grease. The first time that I took a set apart there was hardly any grease in there and what was there was very dirty.

A piece of timber with another block inserted at the rear can be positioned to take the load off the bearings as the through spindle bolts are removed.

The needle rollers are then cleaned out and packed with fresh high melting point grease. Be careful the first time this is done because of the lack of grease in there you are likely to have lots of loose rollers falling out. Best to place a tray underneath to catch any bits. Once packed properly with grease this will not be a problem in the future. It's a little finger job.

All cleaned and lubed ready for another years service.

So far as I know this procedure is not included in the BMW maintenance schedule.

As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Is the bike on a centre stand? Because I haven't got one.

No it's on an Abba workstand. Kind of like a centre stand.

I did my friends bike useing the centre stand.

Often wondered about this as it was a necessity on the fj12, in fact I had a grease nipple fitted. (And the FJRs appear to have a really bad problem). Think I better have a look and see what I can do with the axle stands jack and bar.

There is no specific torque, common sense needed.

I asked at BGM about this and he said it is not a service item as such... I think I will be doing this myself at some point soon as I have a centre stand, I have a garage with carpet in it and I will have the time at some point to get this rather essential job sorted.

This is what they look like when clean  :)

After the OP has decided on his form shock care,I went 50/50, half under the motor and the other from the ceiling of garage, then introduce your bike to the 21st century and fit a set of these and have some decent steering instead of something from the Stone Age 😄

New PR4 GT just arrived today for the back wheel.  I think I'll add this job to the list, (as well as replacing the battery in the TPS, which is starting to get a bit erratic).

Do you remove the whole linkage or do it one bolt at a time. It might seem like a daft question.

Just had a look under the bike to see what we're talking about.

The whole assembly looks very accessible. I had assumed it was tucked up and under more.

And apologies if I'm teaching grandparents to suck eggs  ;)  but remember to remove the nuts first before winding out the bolts, rather than trying to loosen them from the Torx head side.  DAMHIK  ::)

Wedge the back wheel and remove the lot.

Take the back wheel off first...life becomes alot easier, support under the rear bevel, take the bolts out in any order you like, think i’m On my 3rd or is that 4th set of dog bones before I got the old tank too steer the way I wanted  :)

For the less adventurous I do have a set of Sandbars dog bones for anyone looking for just a small adjustment for nominal fee  :)
