I bought one as I thought it'd be easier to lug about than a lock and chain (essential in Northern French Hotel carparks). Yes, it is lighter, but it'll only 'roll' down to a not very compact 300mm or so unless you're built like Arnie (but then you risk getting twatted in the face when you try to release it). I wouldn't reccomend one with seeing one in the flesh first.
Hello, by the way - I still lurk about and I'm still more than happy the the R1250RS change. Just to complete my slide into late mid life, the RC8R has also gone in favour of a R Nine T, which is currently in a thousand bits being modified. And no, its not going to end up a bloomin' cafe racer or street scrambler or any other tired, unimaginative 'style'.

The Euro K Club Lounge / Re: Please recommend me a powder coating place

If you can find a good coaters with motorcycle experience then Powder is food, but as stated, be careful with car finishers. I had a set of wheels done by a 'reputable' company with M/C experience and they blasted the bearing lands, which cocked up the fitment tolerances. I'd find a good painter now; I've had two jobs done on car wheels by a local company who's work is excellent. (AW Smart Repairs, Waldringfield, Ipswich) - can't recommend them highly enough.

I'll now have no qualms about  be travelling distance to outdoor open space to exercise socially distanced once I get there - I'm reading it that only travel for food, medicine, or medical reasons is now superceded.

The Euro K Club Lounge / Hello to the not so big RS
« on: March 24, 2020, 11:08:55 am »
Just thought id pop my head round the door and say hi, although I do lurk to keep tabs on all that's going on (or not!)
I took delivery of my shiney RS in late Nov so it sat in my shed being fiddled with until recently when I've had a chance to get some proper miles on it. As requested heres a few thoughts:

The RS shift cam motor is a proper gem; its torquey, very flexible and surprisingly revvy and potent - the only times it really suffers against the K is the K's relentless drive at three figure speeds, but the RS effortlessly sits at licence troubling speeds with plenty of roll on oomph still available. The gearbox is fine, but the quickshifter should only be used in  3rd and above as its not great 2nd to 3rd. The clutchless downshifts (so long as the throttle is shut) by comparison are faultless, so much so that after 300 miles I only use the clutch in town. Despite some reports of intrusive bar vibration at 4K, mine is a (relatively) calm, smooth relaxing place to be at 80 mph.

The ESA II is great and works really well (most of my miles have been on East Anglian back roads) once you've worked out how to change things about - all the engine and suspension modes can be changed on the fly, although not something I'd recommend. I think the RS handling is easier that the K - I'm not the biggest chap and the K always felt a bit of a charging rhino when barrelling along back roads. It suits me better anyway, and feels smaller, although its still a proper lump to wheel about.

Its no direct K1300s replacement and I can still understand the Ks brutally effective appeal, so if that's what you're after you may well be disappointed but so far I'm dead chuffed with my swop.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Re: Should i use anti-sieze on my wheel bolts?
« on: November 19, 2019, 09:09:46 am »
Aluminium in contact with copper will suffer from galvanic corrosion if it gets wet. I know this for a fact as I put some on to try and stop the wheels on the wife's Golf sticking onto the hubs but I needed to use a fencing maul to get them off the next time. The correct assembly paste for alloy components is something like Castrol Optimol that doesn't contain copper, but I wouldn't use anything on the wheel bolts.

Coppaslip does not cause galvanic corrosion. A small amount of any antisieze is a good thing as it makes acheiving the correct bolt torque more consistant.

It most certainly did come from Reiten - They offered me strong money on the K and  have been great to deal with. I can't reccomend them highly enough. They are lucky to be in the middle of some lovely riding roads. As for the shift cam, I believe its proven car tech thats trickled down - also, it is engaged by the ECU determined by engine speed, throttle angle, day of the week(!) etc, so its not at a predeterimed point. It seems to work - it goes like no boxer Beemer motor I've ever ridden. There may be some fly by wire throttle magic going on but the bottom and mid punch is surprising. I hope the only testing I do of it is to prove how reliable it is.........

Well, The R1250RS turned up early, and I have finally managed to get out for a first little trundle.
First (non - test ride) comparisions with the K1300:
It may be smaller but its still made of BMW lead and a hefty lump to wheel about; the TFT dash is excellent (best Ive seen) and functuonality comprehensive and requires a bit of homework with the handbook. The motor is a peach - Road mode is ideal for town traffic hell and the full fat dynamic mode gives very little away to the K's turbine like delivery, at least at legal-ish speeds. The motor also has a bit more 'character', in that it doesnt feel like a big electric motor (but then I'm a twin fan, my first boxer though). Oh yes, and its a lot harder to get on the centre stand despite being smaller and (a little) lighter - somebody got their geometry a little off.
All in all, so far I'm dead chuffed. When I've done a bigger ride on it I may have more to say (some hope this year now as they've started gritting the roads around here.......)
