Stalling k1300s
« on: August 13, 2021, 01:00:00 pm »
Hi all

I have a 2010 k1300s and recently it's started stalling either coming to a stop or at tickover.

It doesn't always do it so I'm wondering if there's a tickover adjustment that can/needs to be made or if it's an indication of another possible issue?

Any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

Alistair

Check out the Lambda sensor.

There are no physical adjustments on the fuelling side, not even ones the dealer can make apart from the free play in the throttle cable at the twist-grip.

As Rae says, the Lambda sensor or the coils starting to go. Coils give any number of signs of impending failure but stalling at low revs is uncommon although early K12's did it all the time.

Could be a gummed up idle control valve which sits in the bottom of the airbox.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

True! And that can be reset with the GS911 if it is just out of whack with the ECU.

Thanks all.

I need to give the radiator a good clean as it was overheating on the way back from Scotland in that 30 degree heat.

I'll have a look at the lambda at the same time.

Cleaning the radiator is only ever a temporary fix.

Cleaning the radiator is only ever a temporary fix.
But still a fix that can work - as in the annual radiator clean in April/May after the sh*t stops hitting the fan radiator.
It has worked for me so far over the past 52k miles (spread over two bikes, admittedly).

Having had both lambda sensor and idle control valve problems, the symptoms were different. Idle control valve symptoms were just the engine sometimes died as you decelerate. You could immediately bump start if still moving or restart if stopped. Lambda failure gave rich mixture, increased fuel consumption (35mpg), lumpy idle.

That sounds like it's the valve then as those symptoms are exactly what I'm experiencing.

Thanks for the input everyone

Thanks again for the input all. Just to update, I've given the bike a service, replaced the idle control valve and given the radiator a jolly good clean. Having run lots of water through it for about an hour I then got a can of brake and clutch cleaner through it before rinsing again. The water coming from it after that was filthy again.

I took it for a long ride on Sunday and the stalling was gone and it ran cool. Admittedly it was 18 degrees cooler than when it was overheating in July but I think we're sorted.

I hope you took the opportunity to clean the OUTSIDE of the radiator while it was off, because that is where the problem lies...

The fins on the bottom outer corners get clogged with road crud, gradually getting worse until the bottom half of the radiator barely has any airflow through it at all.

It doesn't say it 'magically' fixes stalling.
