Adjusting valve clearances
« on: October 08, 2015, 12:13:17 am »
I'm awaiting a new set of plugs for the bike and with most of the gubbins out of the way decided to check the valve clearances.

I need to reshim five inlet valves and two exhaust valves. Will order three new shims tomorrow and play musical chairs with the other four shims to set the clearances within tolerance. All clearances are on the wide side.

Had to make a couple of hold down tools to keep the camshafts in position as the camshaft clamp nuts are removed. Made them out of a couple of old spark plugs with the electrodes and porcelain removed and some studding. Worked surprisingly well.

Have recorded the sizes and positions of all the spherical spacers which will allow me to order in the required shims before the camshafts are removed on future services.

I wonder how carefully the valve clearances are checked at the dealers? Suspicious that the valves rarely require adjustment or am I being cynical.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Not a cynical bone in your body Tom!

Brian (who wonders if the valve check is done by ear in some dealerships  :o )

I heard that  a Honda workshop did a compression test and if OK said the VTEC valves had been checked and OK. How true that is is anyone's guess
Its not always the destination that counts its the ride, having a destination just stops you going round in circles.

My cranked feelers are imperial hence the imperial measurements

.011" .011" / .012" .012" /  .013" .012" / .011" .012" (inlet should be .007"-.011")

       1                   2                    3                    4                CYLINDERS

.016" .015" / .015" .016" / .017" .017" / .016" .016" (exhaust should be .012"-.016")

Amazingly the dealer had shims in stock. Still waiting for the spark plugs off ebay. I won't pay the dealer the exorbitant price that they want for plugs.

BTW the Reprom shows 0.18mm-0.28mm for inlet.

Thanks for reply.
You need new shims.
Are you going for DENSO spark plugs?
