Engineering workshop wizard wanted...
« on: July 18, 2023, 05:52:47 pm »
I have a spurious need for some small, thin, unobtanium washers. Well, stainless steel actually but it seems that no one makes what I want, which is M6 Form C shims in about 0.3mm thickness. Oh and I need four of them.

The thickness is not too critical but the Form C bit is. That means that the outside diameter is greater than Form B for a given ID. Form B M6 (standard washers) have an outside diameter of 12mm whereas Form C has an OD of 14mm. And that is the critical bit.

The only thing commercially available seems to be M6 Form B in any thinness you like (I tried these but they don't work) or Form C in 'normal' thicknesses. I even tried US stockists for thin 1/4" x 9/16" which would do also.

So, do we have any clever clogs in here who can think of how to reduce common Form B 'thick' stainless washers down to sub-millimetre thickness or even have the wherewithal to do so...plenty of washers and beer provided to the successful wizard.

Of course, a lathe and some stainless stock would work too...

You might find some thin M4 x 14 washers that you could drill out to 6mm. Otherwise, I've got a 20t press that might do a reasonable B form to C form conversion.

Two of these stacked?

Yours, Bodger.

Er...

That would give me 3.2mm thickness. I need 0.3mm thinness. Nice try though.

I like the idea of using a 20t press, a bit like sticking pennies on railway lines. I guess it would need a fair amount of trial and error to see what happens to the inner and outer diameters but Form B stainless washers are two a penny. Well, way less than that in bulk I guess. I'm guessing the id would shrink and the od increase.

The finished item does not have to be completely circular so we could trim the edges to get the desired result.

The thought of trying to drill out a 0.3mm thick shim fills me with dread but once we know what the 'spread' of the material is under pressure than we could try different washer sizes. It might just work and it would be fun trying.

As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Depending on the tolerances you need, I should be able to make some as I have a lathe at home.

Another approach, using a press, might be to find some flat SS sheet or the required thinness and use one of the M6x14 but too thick washers as a die to punch out some thin ones.

this is a tougher one than it seems, been having a think. drilling the hole in a washer is not a handy job, on a 3mm washer i'd say impossible.
punching it sounds like it should work ..probably the simplest way.
also an outside thought, on the old defender steering swivels there are shims to keep your bearings tight, old beetle dynamos use them to adjust the fan belt so there must be others... the sizes escape me at the moment but i'd be fairly confident some of the would be .3mm. outside and inside diameter ....i simply forget but it's an avenue to explore.
