K1200 / K1300 Forum / Bike sold - such a shame
« on: December 20, 2017, 02:03:40 pm »
HMRC were becoming very insistent about an overdue tax bill and so my treasured K1300R has been sold. Watching it being ridden away by its new owner was a very sad moment!

A new bike in the summer is my plan - no idea what yet.

Its a good forum and it was a pleasure to take part.

Ross

Right - problem solved.

The mechanic who solved the problem suggested that the people who did the last service replaced the coolant without using a vacuum pump. This resulted in an air lock which allowed coolant flow but there was too little coolant in the system. The coolant was replaced correctly and the bike is running correctly with no over heating.

Forgive me, I know that this will have been covered before but I cannot find the posts that give sites that match paint codes to VN numbers so ...

What colour is my bike (a 2010 K1300R)?? It looks like Field Grey to me!

Compared to the K1300S, the K1300R headlamp is as useful as a candle in a storm! Has anyone found a simple and in-expensive replacement that actually allows one to see down the road far enough to be safe at 60mph in the dark? Winter is coming! I am not an electrician or a mechanic.

1 GT250A 1975 - 1981 not mine but the same model and colour. I preferred the Suzuki to all the
other 250 offerings available at the time - the Yamaha was too 'modern', the Kawasaki exhaust sounded silly
and the Honda 4-stroke was boring! The GTs disk break was simply a danger in the wet but, as with the other
2-strokes, the acceleration in the upper rev band was excellent - I could beat a Porsche 911 away from traffic
lights ... albeit briefly ... not bad for bike with L-plates  8) ;D

2 BMW GS1100 2007 - 2008 I passed my test in 2007 and bought this - perhaps a bit of a challenge
after so many decades off a bike but it served me well. As soon as I got the hang of it I took it to
France for a 4 week solo trip - no better way to learn to ride and to learn some (very) basic French!

3 Ducati S4RS 2008 - 2009
Part-exchanged the 1100 for this as I fell in love with the power and colour scheme ... far too small for me really.
It would pull a wheelie if you turned on the ignition, never mind if you loaded the rear with luggage as I did for
this trip to Scotland  ;D

4 BMW F800GS 2008 - 2009
I owned this along side the Ducati for a while and this was the bike I took to Morocco with my then partner on
her GS750 (also an 800cc bike) - five weeks of absolute biking bliss with off-roading in the Atlas Mountains and
the Sahara desert - an excellent bike for such trips!

5 BMW K1300S 2009 - 2011
I fancied a change - what a change! Wow! The only issue - the riding position hurt unless I was traveling at speed.
It was so easy to speed far above the legal maximum without even noticing ;D

6 BMW F800GS 2011
I fancied a return to on-road/rough-road touring so part-exchanged the K1300S for this. A great bike but I had already
been there/done that so eventually exchanged it for the mad, bad ...

7 KTM 990Adv 2012 - 2013
No road bike should do what this bike can do off-road! I took it on some off-road rally courses in Wales and also to France touring
on-road. It was less than perfect at the touring side of things being a bit rough so far as low-speed fuelling was concerned and
the fuel tank, ergonomically designed for excellent off-road handling (you can sit almost on top of it for low-speed manuvering in mud and other
challenging conditions), had a very small capacity for road riding.

8 BMW K1300R 2013 - now
I began to wonder about the R as a stylistically mad alternative to the S with what looked like a better riding position so took a test ride - right on
both counts ... I love this bike!

Okay, I give up! How does one leave Photobucket? I have deleted all my images (which took an age with all the adverts and an apparent slow response from the site) but cannot find a way to close my account.

K1200 / K1300 Forum / Re: Spoilt by the k13r

My K1300R is my keeper bike.

Its the power, mad but head-turning looks and ease of handling that win it for me ... provided the repair costs don't sky-rocket.

The K1300 series are, in my opinion, bikes on the edge of their production engineering spec, by which I mean they are high-maintenance machines as delivered by BMW (I would love to hear of one with an engine and running gear re-built to near-ideal tolerances). I have already had to replace the rear shock (at around 30,000 miles) but we managed to source a second-hand shock for less than £70 from ebay. It is the correct ESA version and still has no weeping seals after £3000 miles (they get so sad when my bike breaks). Buying a second hand shock is always a risk but so far, so good. As for my recent over-heating in traffic issue, it could be a new radiator in the end but still not worth selling the bike over. I am not a track user/racer and so the engine potential has never turned into anything over 125mph on a straight bit of road here in sunny North Devon but that's plenty for me (more than enough!) and the way it gets there is amazing ;D Being a bit of an egotist, I love a bike that's turns heads and the K1300R (and S for that matter) certainly does that.

A review: dated somewhat now but it confirms my opinions ... no video for ipad users to be concerned with ...

Its just the styling that doesn't appeal to me - very 'far eastern' ... which isn't surprising I suppose.
