Title: New Australian member
Post by: 0913s on March 19, 2018, 10:22:21 am
Hi guys,

1st time BMW owner as of last week!

I picked up a 09 K1300S for a song with just under 60K on the clock.

What a bike! I’m still getting my head around everything it does & after clocking up a few more K’s, I should be settled right in.

I have some questions regarding putting a top box on, but if anyone could post up some general info, that’d be awesome. I’ll find the most appropriate place to post.

Is image hosting only done by 3rd party sites?

I look forward to reading through the forum & learning from others experiences.

Welcome aboard, if you put your name and location in your profile it will help other members know what to call you and give targeted advice should you need it. There are a few thread about top box fitment, just perform a search and all will be revealed.

Don't listen to him, he's been insane for a while now and I though had been banned; he has now  8)

So, welcome to the madhouse that is EuroKClub from way down under from those of us way up here.

Now then, topboxes.

You can go the BMW route with the stock plastic carrier and the floppy but excellent bag system.

The most common route for those sensible enough to realise that topboxes make the bike go 30 mph faster and turn on a dime is the Givi Monokey range, NOT the smaller scooter-targeted Monolock range, unless you want a smaller box. Either will fit.

You will need a mount and for me the answer is the SW-Motech Alurack. This replaces the stock pillion handles with steel tube ones and a neat, angular plate that sits above the rear light and is almost undetectable. My only reservation about recommending the Alurack is that some pillions find the handles difficult to get their fingers through...

On top of this, you will need the SW-Motech Monokey mounting plate which quick-attaches/detaches from the angular plate with 3 x 1/4 turn fasteners, or can be left on as you see fit. This system is flexible, adaptable and discrete in place.

If you don't already have the Sport Cases fitted, they are a much neater and more flexible solution for load-lugging than a box unless you intend spending your days filtering in crowded cities.

And, to answer your question, yes, we only allow piccies via 3rd party hosts and there is plenty of stuff about it in the How To section. As you will see from all the missing piccies in posts we all fell foul of the PhotoBucket fuck up so avoid them like the plague. We also have our own Google drive, again details in the files.

Oh, and seeing as most of us are festering under 6” of snow or more, any tales of sunny riding down under WILL get you banned toot sweet; something most members lust after without success. The being banned that is, not the sunny riding, we all HATE sunny rides here in UK  8)

Welcome to the forum.

I have to agree wiith black-K1. Fitting a top box to this bike is a definite no no. What on earth are you thinking of?

Heck. Why not a topcase ? I' ve been on the road for years with the bike. All holiday traffic was using a drybag and a topcase. Who cares ? Of course it looks nicer without one, but does it necessarily look nicer than these BMW cases ? Not convinced   :-X  !

I had a BMW option (don't know how it's called in English) with a Krauser plate and adapter plate fixed to it. On top came the (erm...) topcase, a Krauser K5 (47 liters). As I'm selling my bike, and have pictures online for the moment, you can have a good idea of how such a combination looks, here : https://www.2dehands.be/motoren/motoren/bmw/bmw-k1300s-diverse-opties-395801585.html

I think of topboxes as the caravan of the motorcycle world.

So here's my theory:
- if you like a caravan, you'll like a topbox.

Discuss.  :o

You say, " Why not a topcase ?" Simple really the centre of gravity of the luggage on the bike with the top box is well behind the centre of the rear axle. In your eyes it looks fine but to me it looks totally wrong and very dangerous. I dread to think of how the bike must handle at the sort of speeds that I happily travel at on my bike with the sports panniers and a tank bag.

Well, I've ridden fully loaded (with a topbox and sport cases) with folks with any combination of cases, tankbags and naked and never noticed any difference in handling ability; it's not like any of us are anywhere near the true limits of the chassis. Either way, it's nowhere near as much of an upset as a pillion...

Bike 320 kg
Rider 80 kg
Topbox 15kg

It's the airflow that does most damage to stability, I reckon, not the weight. But agreed there's no worse place than up top at the rear.

I'd love to see a pillion on the tank then  ;D

There's some truth in what is being said, of course. But I just never had any complaint about the stability nor had I ever even a beginning of an unstable feeling bike. Also : the topcase is not intended to be filled with heavy material of all kinds. At least, I never ever looked at it in this way. My only concern was to have hard luggage of some kind. And during my holidays, I also never had the need for a free pillion seat (my wife doesn't ride, I'm too bad a rider  :'(  )

Also note that my bike was (and still is) limited to 107 BHP. So if I ever got in the vicinity of the maximum speed, those rare cases, on the German highways, my bike was limited to ... erm ... "only" 230 km/hour. Not exactly a speed that would make such a bike tip on its back wheel  ???

You should get a topbox then Brian. Oh I forgot you do have a topbox.

The c of g of a pillion will be forward of the rear wheel axle like the K1300S panniers and certainly not like a topbox.

Not many loaded topboxes come in at 15kg and we are not talking about the bike tipping on it's back wheel. We are talking about the sort of instability experienced by Pan riders.

Look, Brian. As one to another I feel there is something I should explain in very simple English. I would explain it in a different language but I only speak English and Gibberish!

If you like Topboxes (and I lerrrrrrve them), then there is no point trying to rationalise with the Philistines...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philistinism

...among the membership who don't like the LOOK of them.

Sure, they will try all sorts of technical, 'laws of physics' type of stuff to get you to see the 'light'.

Ignore them. They are dim as a Toc H...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toc_H

...lamp...

https://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/42/messages/1074.html

...see, the 'light'!

I could put my summer house on the back of my bike and out-ride most of these eejits.

Brian (who says David and Tom do not need to apply, nor even respond, as I could put my house on the back of their bikes and it would make no perceptible difference  to their incredibly rapid and progressive rides 8) )
