Losing phone calls!
« on: June 12, 2016, 12:14:05 pm »
Having been an Autocom and Garmin Streetpilot user since Adam was a lad and never had a single 'interface' problem other than cables and connectors getting past their use-by date, last year I decided to drag myself, screaming, into the 20th century.

I updated to a Sena 20S and Garmin 660. No more cables to forget to plug in after a fuel stop. No more getting tangled in my own web and no more dodgy screen on my old Garmin (since fixed and working as well as new by the erstwhile Mr Parry).

However, there is one thing that really bugs me; I can NEVER accept a phone call on this set up. Never a moment's hesitation on the old set up but this one rejects phone calls no matter what I do.

I have tried to accept an incoming call by tapping the 'Accept' button on the Garmin but it just hangs up the call. I have tried by pressing the buttons on the Sena but it just hangs up as well.

The Wrinklies got separated at a major roundabout roadworks system last week and both halves of the group realised immediately but were now separated by four-way traffic lights and no line of sight.

Rae tried calling me, but I hung up (well, can you blame me?). He tried again, but the same thing. We were both stationary and in full control of our fingers but still no luck!

So, is anyone out there using a late model Garmin and a Sena set up which will allow phone calls?

Brian (the contactless who hasn't tried making a call yet cos he doesn't know anyone else with a phone  ::) )

Having given this some thought Brian, is there a setting on the phone that you need to alter. I'm not familiar with Iphones so maybe talking rubbish.

I found this more relevant video which is the same setup as you have Brian. Take a look and let us know how you get on.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ExqIxKWbGg

In the video he says to pair the phone to the GPS then the GPS to the 20S "as a phone" so if you paired the GPS to the Sena as a GPS (fancy!) it might account for the problem.

Take a look at page 17 of the user manual.

Me too. But none of that helps when one half of a group go this way and the other half go that way and they are then seperated by 10 minutes of four way traffic lights with no idea who is doing what; stopping, continuing, coming back looking for us? That would have been a nightmare, we could all still be on that bloody one-way magic roundabout looking for each other  8)

Er, well! Ere's the thing! It still doesn't work properly.

The second video was the most instructive and wayyyyy more helpful than the bloody stupid Sena user manual which goes to great lengths to explain HOWto do things, but not WHY you might want to do it; nothing about 'if you want to use the phone from the Garmin', oh no, nothing as useful as that!

When I looked into all the crooks and nannies of my set up, I discovered that I had the iPhone paired with the Sena and the Garmin and the Sena paired with the Garmin also. Easy mistake to make I keep telling myself.

So, I told everything to forget everything else, turned everything off and started again, following the perfectly clear and easily understood (even by a muppet like me  :o ) directions in the video.

It all worked as shown but a) testing a phone connection when you have a dodgy phone connection and are not in the same room as the person to whom you are trying to explain what you are doing,  and b) trying to ring yourself on the house phone while wearing your skid lid is a bit like trying to hold a sensible conversation with yourself while under the influence.

However, despite much much screeching and wailing from my cordless phone, Garmin and iPhone all being in my hands at the same  call didn't cut off like it did on the Wrinklies trip, so that, at least, is something  ;D

So, the jury is out till the weekend possibly.

One thing I noticed which I have never seen before is that when I rang my mobile from my house phone, the iPhone (which, of course, is usually in my jacket pocket) burst into life and rang like it does on an normal call but wanted me to choose from an endless list of options for answering the phone; never did it in the old days as far as I know and certainly never does it in the car with the Audi phone prep? The Garmin behaved perfectly normally, showing me there was an incoming call and asking me to Accept or Reject it.

So, mysteriouser and mysteriouser mister!

More anon....
