Dunlop Mutant M+S
« on: January 23, 2022, 09:46:59 am »
Has anyone tried these, either on K or another bike? Seems they are available in the right sizes for the K13S and I've seen them fitted to 1290 Super Duke. Does anyone bother with winter tyres?

Gosh it looks much further along the scale than I've seen on our bikes so far. Would be interesting to hear first hand experience of it though for sure. If I was doing the single track days of last year's trip every day I'd be tempted!

Well they seem to work OK on a BMW:

With a tread pattern like that rain and/or poor surfaces (a bit like many minor UK roads) may well be it's forte.

Despite helibars I still find my K13 a PITA around town and was looking at putting my old 950sm back on the road for city duty. Find it really skittish on damp roads with the Z8 interacts which even though they are brilliant when fully wet they don't like cold winter mornings.  Was looking at mutants as a possible fitment for the SM because of the high silicon content.  Not seen many reviews though.

I went and picked up a pair for my Z900RS, just need to fit them now. I'll report back in due course. Looking at them in real life they certainly seem stiff enough to go on a K13, though the Road 5s I've got on mine at the moment aren't too bad in the cold/wet and have a fair bit of life left. The OE Dunlops on the Z though are really quite scary in the current weather.

I'll be really interested to hear how you get on. I'm very happy with the Road 5's then the RoadTec 01's I've had on the H2 SX but all tyres are a compromise. As I don't do the commuting I used to, I'd happily give up a little of the range (around 7,500 miles for the Road 5 and 7,000 miles for the 01) in return for a little more feel and faster turn in. I'm currently looking at the Metzler 9RR or the Pilot Power RS but they may be just a little to track oriented.

With that much tread 😳 a K would eat them alive never mind turn them to chewing gum and chuck you over the hedge of the first corner you come to with the amount of moving around you would get.

If folk are prepared to sacrifice some mileage...Michelin Power RS...as I prefer the best of both worlds run a 5 on the back and RS on the front, that’s both on my K/X/R and KTM.

Conversely they would be great for an everyday all weather bike thats not too heavy.  High silicon and hysteresis from the blocks moving would warm them up really fast, for exactly the same reasons they would be destroyed on a K as Chris mentioned.  They obviously work though, I've raced Cadwell and the speed of that guy in the damp was impressive.

You may be right but Dunlop claim these tyres have been designed for, amongst others, adventure bikes, many of which will match the K in terms of weight (especially loaded) and many of which match in terms of power. I admit that there are none that match both in terms of weight and power but they're not far short.

We do like photos!
But that says 180/55 ZR 17. It's missing the 10 needed to get to 190/55.

Or aren't they going on a K?

These are for my z900RS… thought I’d try them on that as the OE Dunlops aren’t much fun in the cold and wet.
