Quickshifter stopped working
« on: July 11, 2021, 04:52:14 pm »
Hmm, odd that, especially if you're lazy like me and use it a lot. I miss it already, after just an hour without.

I had a couple of iffy changes, which isn't unusual (but one straight after another is unusual), and then the quickshifter gave up completely.

Other symptoms:
- the gear indicator is bit random as you let the clutch out - 4-2-6. It does settle on the right gear after 0.5-1.0 second
- neutral no longer shows, but you can select it (with care since you're not quite sure)
- bike won't start unless you pull in the clutch

Nothing obvious externally - i.e. no loose bits, and the gear changes are still fine with the clutch.

The bike is under warranty, so I'll ring BMW tomorrow, but if there's a magic fix, please do let me know!

Sounds like it could be the gear position indicator switch, Rich

Make sure to find out how much it would have cost. My first bet is 400. Everything at BMW is always 400.

The new gear selector potentiometer will need to be reset and calibrated to the bike, GS-911 can do this.

If you have the extended warranty why would you do it yourself?

£100 excess. But I'd prefer them to fix it. My engineering skills are not even vestigal.  :(

All of our local BMW Dealers close on Monday, perhaps not the case nationally? (Contact the dealer tomorrow, from above).

Just keen to know as I can ride at anytime being retired, but always assumed that I was on my own on Sundays/Mondays and Bank Holidays should there be a problem!

Just rang North Oxford BMW - and they were open. (Things are different in Norfolk - but then again, that's always been true. ;D)
I'm taking it in Wed, for them to look at it on Thursday.

In the meantime, we can play 'Guess the loan bike'. Will it be:
- S1000 XR
- R nineT
- or maybe a G310 R? Gulp.

One day maybe I'll try a S1000RR. Knowing it's only 1 hour home, I can always de-origami my legs halfway there/back.

Many thanks for that, I assumed that it was a national policy that dealers adhered to.

As a matter of interest, many of the dealers for other makes also close here on Monday's too, might be useful for anyone visiting to know!

As long as the emergency assist lot still work! I mean you'd be completing your journey in a 320d if it's anything like here but still, better than walking!

One day maybe I'll try a S1000RR. Knowing it's only 1 hour home, I can always de-origami my legs halfway there/back.

1. Reason
- Faulty gear potentiometer (on the end of somewhere - gear shaft?)
- didn't require a strip-down
- Part cost was £85 + VAT. Bit steep for a variable resistor?!
- labour not mentioned, but I'd hazard 1 hour, or thereabouts, i.e. not a lot.
- covered by warranty, so £100 excess, in my case

I'm OK with that.

2. Loan bike was a F900XR. Couldn't be arsed to take a photo, but the pros & cons:
- good engine. Enough to have fun.
- good suspension, and dynamic mode is perfectly usable
- brakes plenty good enough too
- bit buzzy, gave me numb nuts within 30 mins until I moved position. Ouch.
- So-so clutch, but that's probably just my loan bike. It needed some serious adjustment, I ran out of adjustment/play.
- shockingly bad windscreen in the upper position. I've never had such a vicious head hammering as that at 80mph. I still can't believe it even now. Due to my height, I guess.

Not the bike for me, but the basics were OK.
