Title: Bears in the air...
Post by: Phmode on July 10, 2018, 08:34:20 pm
Anyone seen or heard of the chopper coppers checking on speeders recently?

It used to be a real pain/urban myth that they did this way back.

One has just spent an infuriating half hour (for me, not him) zooming madly up and down the road through the village, following every twist and turn, then turning and zooming madly back the other way just as a car speeds past.

I'm not complaining about them clocking speeders through MY village mind. I just don't want to get nicked in someone else's village is all... ::)

...and, having taken a statutory tea and fag break, he's back again... :-\

There are square marks on the larger sweeping country roads around us which I always assumed were for helicopters.
I do occasionally look upwards and see one, but they're usually following the motorway or hovering over a town trying to track a specific vehicle/person, not me.

Got followed by one with the camera thing on it in Snowdonia for 10 minutes or so. Eventually stopped half way down one of the passes and refused to move. It hovered opposite me for a minute or so then finally buggered off. 2009!

The A34 has such squares, been there for years. I always thought they were for the cars to spot distance back in the days before laser guns became popular.

Anyway, no squares in my village, apart from me.

Afterwards, I did think I should have sent the drone up to have a look 👀

So, apropos nothing at all, Postman Pat (real name changed from Neil to protect his identity) brarp-braaaaaped his way up my gravel drive at an unseemly pace on his exceedingly sharp and talented KTM350 this afternoon.

'Come on then, let's get this Honda blooded!'

'Oooer!'

'Well, seeing as that escaped convict didn't get you, youv'e got no excuse! Get yer kit on and let's go!'

And so, after about 2,400 miles of off-road hell, eating his dust and wondering why his handguards were on upside down, we paused for breath, a drink of saline solution and a quick take-in of the view.

'So, what's all this about an escaped convict then?'

'Don't tell me you didn't see the police helicopter chasing up and down your road t'other evening...'

And so, kind gentlefolk of Herefs, you can all relax and sleep easy in yer beds. The cops are not, after all, chasing down manic speeders in the scattered villages of our fair county. Escaped rapists, pillagers and murderers I can cope with (especially now I have two loaded 12 bores by my bed in case he was of the 'bent' variety of rapist), airborne speed cops I most certainly can not!

On our way back, there was a small white plastic bag adorning the entrance to the village. I stopped and moved it to the other side of the road just to confuse the eff out of the filth. Well, the rumour about the escaped convict could just be a cover story after all...

A few years ago on the A4212 travelling from Trawsfynydd to Bala, making <cough> progress on my Boxercup, there was a car coming the other way. I thought he we sticking two fingers up at me, when I got closer I realised he was pointing upwards. When I looked the NW Plod chopper was following me.

Apparently it costs a couple of grand an hour to run, and the best use they can make of it is to try and book someone for speeding on an empty NSL road in good conditions..... sad

I suppose it 'might' have been a training exercise...

Or a boxer fan...

But you're right, bleedin' sad and outrageous to boot.

Whenever I'm in Wales I can't help but semi-occasionally be climbing all over the bike to look behind and up as i'm making progress!

'Come on then, let's get this Honda blooded’

Those Hondas only have one fork spring, so I’m told.

That's quite correct, the whole fork twists sideways when you brake or hit a bump... ::)

Oh, and no bump, rebound or pre-load adjustments either....
