2005 K1200S - Correct oil quantity to put in Diff ?
« on: May 25, 2017, 09:28:34 pm »
Maybe someone can advise me - I have just dismantled the back end to change the oil in the diff on my K1200S 2005 UK model.
The official manual says it should take 180 ml of Castrol SAF-XO oil to refill ( now superseded by Castrol Syntrax synthetic gear oil 75W/90 ).
However, I have drained mine and measured how much came out  - 250ml.
I have also read on a 'How to post'  somewhere on here that an Owner in U.S.A describes refilling the diff with 230ml oil.
Can anyone tell me how much I should put back in there please ?

The manual definitely says 180 ml maybe someone else overfilled it.

I fill it to the level of the filler/ drain bung but not sure what volume that works out at.

180ml went into my k13s at all services.
Its not always the destination that counts its the ride, having a destination just stops you going round in circles.

The old work order was for 250 but it has been superseded back on 2012 with a new Directive for 180. Your mechanic needs to do some homework.

Thanks to all for quick response - 180 ml it is then.
The bike is new to me with full main agent record - but it will be all my own service work from now - bike is stripped down in my garage and I will be carrying out every service job I can think of before I ride it - It takes so long to get at everything I might as well do a thorough job over a couple of weeks.
It actually had a new rear suspension unit + Abs unit last year under warranty at enormous expense, with a previous owner, but change very manky air filters at the same time - no !

Why would they go looking at the air filters when they were changing ABS and rear shock?

C'mon, techs looking for work, doing things the schedule doesn't call for and the customer will never notice?

Yes, I suppose that is too much to ask when a customer is paying serious labour charges, to expect matters requiring attention should be brought to the unqualified owner's attention.
This bike has 10 services/ inspections by the same Main stealer, and I have found a number of issues which should have been noticed and dealt with, but at least I will be able to ride it with some confidence that I have gone right through everything- even if it does take me a month to do all the work. ( I clean everything as well - even the parts you can't see, like the inside of the fairing panels and air filter intakes ).

I'm glad I'm not the only sad git that cleans the inside of the fairing when I have them off  :-[

I thought it was just me!

I not only clean them, I polish them as well, even though they are rough finish.

Personally I don't understand why you wouldn't clean the inside of the panels when you take them off. Presumably you would clean what you can't usually get at.
