Alternative Ram Arm
« on: December 28, 2018, 05:33:07 pm »
I have bought one of these

https://www.sportouring.co.uk/shop/mvmotorrad/mv-3d-navigation-holder-10348/

which give much more flexibility than the standard RAM Arm. It's a bit on the expensive side, but there are no pockets in a shroud.  ;)

I'm not sure I quite understand the question Brian as the picture is fairly self explanatory.  :-[

The design gives a much greater range of movement.

I think the bolts are intended to show the range of movement possible with this device compared to the genuine Ram mount. In my limited experience of Ram mounts it’s a solution to a problem they don’t have... unless you’re trying to make a sort of u-bend out of them.

Ah gotcha, the bolts are only there to demonstrate the amount of movement, you only get the arm, bolt and knob.

OK, I didn't look hard enough, sorry. The alternative one on the right has a greater angle it can sweep through. The one on the left is the RAM original, but the bolts and wingnut pointing upwards made it look slightly odd.

The alternative one has less surface area touching the ball, and is more likely to bend/flex (less strengthening material in the direction that the screw tightens - left to right in the pic), so will it grip as well as the RAM original?
But I guess the amount of weight (a GPS unit, Rae?) won't create much of a force.

It's a sturdy bit of kit and it would take a lot more force to break or bend it than to hold any device.

Who woke you up Costas?

Now I see. To be fair, the advert is not showing the full range of movement of the stock RAM mount, but not of the new one either... ::)

It would have solved a problem on my old R1150GS quite neatly. I needed to turn the effective position of the arm through 90 degrees; vertically off the bar, 90 right and then 90 toward me. I had to cut a third 'slot' in the raised end of one arm and being plastic it lasted about 2 days. It worked OK when I switched to an aluminium one but this would have been a neater solution as the bolt fixing can come out between the two halves of the clamp as well as out through the cut-outs.

Looks like it might crush your balls if you’ve not careful, and that’s never good.

Mine are well nadgered after all the abuse they have taken down the years   :(

A firm grip is usually best but the tendency is always to screw too much  ::)

I think I'll have to treat myself to a new set for the new year  8)

See that is what happens when someone opens a subject, in a moment for sure another one will discover he is in the need for a new replacement gadjet. Motorcycle society and its upturns. or it's best , as you prefer.
