All fixed and happy now....

Headstock bearings were a complete pig to get out, and the less said about the ball joints the better  ;D

Hit a big Oxfordshire pothole a few weeks ago on the way home - put the bike away and took a proper look at it yesterday..

From what I can see I have a damaged front wheel rim, the headstock bearings are notchy and there seems to be a lot of play in the bottom ball joint.

The wheel is probably repairable - £50-£80, bearings ordered (£40) New ball joints from BMW are about £150 each (I'll probably order a pair of FRAP ones which seem to come well regarded) and I need to get the SW55 tool as well..

I'll be off to photograph the pothole and see what OCC think about my claim for damage... I'll offer them the option of me doing it with my labour cost at £30 an hour, or giving it to North Oxford BMW to do which I suspect will involve significantly more money ...

I'm more than happy with the Metz Roadtec 01's fitted to my K1300R. Absolutely confidence in the wet and great in the dry..

Have one on my K1300R as I spend a lot of time in traffic behind students who won't filter :-) Does what it says on the box

I use Tesco 99RON and can tell the difference. The easiest way to tell the difference is to try very low speed running in top gear - sub 25mph - and try a (reasonably) quick roll on. On 95RON the bike will likely "spit an fart" and object. On 99RON it'll pull cleanly, and reasonably quickly.

Agreed, my 08 13R definitely prefers 99 RON..

Sure, but it's not unique to BMW's.. We check the oil levels in about 10 DAS bikes (Suzuki SV650's and Honda CBF650's) per day, all have sidestands and low down sight glasses  ;D

I bought a centrestand kit (SW Motea) for mine  as well as a Paddock stand...

I just got the K1300R! Tomorrow I will be getting it from the seller, really excited.

Thanks for all your concerns about the R90S. My plan is to keep both bikes for a couple of months, and then decide in what to do. I don't like to have more than one bike, so the plan is still to sell the R90S. I feel a bit broken hearted about this, but I noticed I have lost the joy in maintaining the bike...

Picture please :-)
You know what they look like  ::) It's that ugly Kings Road posers bike. Almost as bad as a Harley. And just in case nobody notices some riders even fit noisy exhausts.

Ahem "lightweight audio safety system" if you please  ;D

OK I downloaded the Owner Manual to answer my question. The manual states

Make sure the engine is at operating
temperature and hold
the motorcycle upright.
with centre stand generation
IIOA
Check that the engine is at operating
temperature, make sure
the ground is level and firm
and place the motorcycle on its
centre stand.
Allow the engine to idle for one
minute.
Switch off the ignition.

Pretty useless information if they don't fit a centre stand.

So I'll ask again how do you hold the bike upright and check the oil? I suppose it's easy if you have a mate to help you.

Put it level and look at the little tube thing...  You could even stick something under the side stand... Loads of other bikes have this issue...

Just out of interest David, how do BMW recommend you check the oil with no centre stand?
Not rocket science. You stand the bike upright.

Sure, they're not listing the stand I bought, only one at double the price :-)  :D

I've got a tomtom rider on my VFR using the ram yoke mount and a bike mounted power supply. Useless in sunshine, so use the BT connection to my helmet.

On the K13R I simply use my phone and google maps for audio directions. However I do have a 5V USB power supply I can connect to BMW aux DIN  power supply.

paddock stand I imagine... I bought a perfectly good one for about £35 on ebay even though I fitted a centrestand as well...

Merchant was busters2009 - however no longer seem to be listed... :-(
