Title: Newbie from Ireland
Post by: 28_Ashvale on September 17, 2020, 02:17:10 pm
Hi All,

Only recently found the forum but have my 08 K1200GT SE for 5 years now and it's just turned over 68000 miles

It was not a bike I had been looking to buy but I was searching through eBay and came across this one and a deal was done - and as it happens I have discovered the previous owner on the forum here :)

looking forward to catching up on some of the posts and advice and a possible upgrade to a K13 in the near future :)

(any tips on posting pictures please?)

Hello Shay nice that you have found us.
FYI peeps Shay bought my K1200GT from me several years ago, nice to know it's still going strong.

Have a poke around Shay there is lots of info in here.

There is a thread on posting pictures in the How To section.

A sincere welcome from the Capital.

There are quite a few of us popping up on the map.  We might even organise a get-together some time.

So is Rae losing his marbles or is it really Tray? I seem to see Shay...

Anyhoo, welcome to the madhouse that is EuroKClub and only another 32,000 miles to go to equal Martin's K12S. Brian

It is Shay, but I get that quite a bit actually - a combination of 1st and Surname "Tray Sheanor" - perhaps I should change my username lol  & perhaps Rae needs to get back on a K! ;)

Well I am from the West originally but won't argue with you about the Capital comment- it's a super part of the country down there and I normally get to visit a couple of times a year with a group of ex Army lads I ride out with! I'll meet you in the middle :)
Welcome!

Not for a while, I'm a Dub, were at level 3 now. You'd have to arrange a man with a flag shouting "Unclean, Unclean!"

Middle bolt at the bottom of the side fairing looks a little pinched but otherwise as nice a GT as one could ever want to come across.

I am not sure what it is about this time of year, apart from it being my birthday month but I always seem to change bike about now. This time 5 years ago I picked up the K12GT from Rae and I have been looking at what was on the eBay and other places for a few weeks - this particular bike went up a couple of times so I made a bid, contacted the seller and we have struck a deal.

Payment processing and working on the courier as we speak! Cant wait :)

Now I have to also decide what to do with the K12 - the market for them here is not great :( so it might go back across the water!

Nice! Like the pod on the rear too.

Is that boot-shaped one a clutch protecting bit of carbon?

They're getting a bit rare now,  Tom. The first one I bought was £22, the second was £28.
There's one on eBay - £35 inc P&P which is probably about the going rate now:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-K1200S-K1300S-UK-REAR-SPLASHGUARD-RARE-NOW-46-62-7-675-424/313232213852?hash=item48ee18475c:g:~~EAAOSwWItfJFEP

And possibly a Danish bargain here (£12), but check with the bike shop about P&P to the UK first:
https://www.123mc.dk/brugt/mc/reservedele/bmw-k1200sk1300s-46627675424/-50702
Actual seller is:
https://www.toftlundmc.dk/

There are a few others in Europe, but around 30 Euros.

You might find a BMW dealer may have one laying about...

You missed the Ilmberger hugger  ;D...what I have always done is taped the back of the swing arm where the Scht comes off the hugger and replace it on a regular basis and it keeps things spic and span.

If your in it for the long haul, i’d Either fit or pay to have a Power Commander put on it will clean the bottom end fuel up even if you think it doesn’t need it, and when you have got over the shock of paying for the bike  :), fit some after market wheels if you are in tight mode just do the front, will take the bike too another level, it’s why I still keep mine even though I have the X/R and GT.

No, it's actually Mellifont Abbey. It's outside Drogheda in the middle of nowhere and is lovely and quiet and one of many ancient ruins in the locality.

I will have a look in the 4 boxes of parts the original one may be there!

We only have 2 Motorrad main dealers in the Republic one is 20k away and the other is nearly 300k away, so they have a monopoly on parts. My mileage will be low as I am working from home for the foreseeable so the R will be for the weekend spins with a few mates and the occasional cross country jaunt

I have the same after market carbon lower belly pan panels, took them off when I was fitting the Akra headers and left them off as the bike is easier to clean, so after 11 years the jury is out on them  ::) ;D

Well it was a brief affair with the 13R! I enjoyed a few spirited runs out over the summer months but the more I used it the more I realised it was just not practical for what I will be wanting from a bike over the next couple of years, so with a heavy heart (and to keep Mrs T happy) I advertised it for sale.

Not 1 call for weeks then one weekend I had 4 calls all offering the asking price - I was suspicious initially but after chatting to one chap a couple of times and with the promise of a decent deposit the bike was paid for and collected and off to a good home down in Wexford.

So for the first time in over a decade I have no bike and the market here is particularly bad at the moment - not alot of stuff for sale and prices have jumped since additional VAT charges have been applied to bikes from the UK, however I will be keeping my eyes open for something interesting with a decent screen and luggage

Er, yes! A decent screen is always good, and you could have added the luggage easily enough.

Let us know what you look at as and when you find it.

As to Brexit, I was hesitating to hit the buy button on a good deal on a product from a company in 'Ireland' with the word 'Ireland' in their name. My finger got the collywobbles but I managed to find it among all the other companies in 'Ireland' with exactly the same company name. Turns out they were in Portstewart. Confusing or what.

I had the expandable panniers and a small fly screen, but at speed on the motorway it was hard work for the trips I have planned next year and into the future plus the  panniers are quite small.

In comparison to the luggage on the K1300 and the R1150's I have had previously it was just not suitable.

So on my list of likes are;

anything else will be a welcomed addition

Ireland can be confusing - but we are used to it!  ;D and we miss the benefits of pre Brexit UK when it comes to grabbing an early Ryanair flight collecting a cracking motorbike then hopping onto the A55 to Holyhead for a ferry home before the Mrs gets home from work!
