Tyre valve (possible puncture again)
« on: December 06, 2016, 11:27:19 am »
Coming into work this morning and Tyre pressure dropped from 3 to 2.3 bar. Big flashing red danger symbol again. Anyways checks tyre and nothing obvious. Pressure seems steady at the moment. Problem being tried to inflate at a couple of garages but Shrader valve on K13S seems to short and only manages to let air out. Has anybody else similar experience or can you buy and adapter to increase length so the stupid forecourt Air compressor fit ok.

Had exactly same issues recently. Rear sensor has failed and it my be front is on way out. Definitely worse in cold weather although do nt recall this last winter, maybe battery is on its last legs. As far as forecourt airlines are concerned, yes anything that's old and worn struggles to depress valve pin and seal.

Go to Halfords and get one of these...

http://www.halfords.com/motoring/motorcycling/motorcycle-accessories/oxford-valve-adaptor-90-deg?cm_mmc=Google+PLA-_-Motorcycling-_-Motorcycle+Accessories-_-204336&_$ja=tsid:60494%7Ccgn:GoogleShopping%7Ckw:204336&istCompanyId=b8708c57-7a02-4cf6-b2c0-dc36b54a327e&istItemId=qlrmmwpwp&istBid=tzwl&_$ja=tsid:35522%7Ccid:427600924%7Cagid:30036280924%7Ctid:aud-80976661069:pla-230444787844%7Ccrid:106226716564%7Cnw:g%7Crnd:17478877381020016501%7Cdvc:t%7Cadp:1o1&gclid=CPe6qd6739ACFeyc7QodZTIGvg

...BUT DO NOT RIDE WITH IT FITTED as it WILL break your tyre valve stem as Martin (fjtwelve) found to his cost last week!

The problem with garage forecourt sirlines is that it is difficult to get the gizmo to seal to the valve stem even though it pushes the pin down, which, as you have discovered, just lets the air out  8)

When I used an adaptor I always found it best to over inflate slightly and let some out until you got to the desired pressure. I always carried a pressure gauge in the cubby.

top find - just what I've been looking for to solve the exact same problem (of forecourt airlines actually deflating the tyre)

I've got one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Slime-40001-Motorcycle-Tire-Inflator/dp/B000ET9SB4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1481045459&sr=8-3&keywords=slime+tyre+inflator and don't wreck my valves trying to fit petrol station tyre inflaters. Works when you get a puncture out in the wilds as well.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

...but, don't try using the inflator in the 12v power outlet as the Can't-bus will shut it down in a few seconds as the current consumption is way too high.

If you want to carry a pump, make sure you can run it directly from the battery. My 'Airforce' pump will inflate two bike tyres without the engine running and still allow the bike to start although I always run the engine when I use it.

Ah well, confirmed last night. I do have a bloody nail in the tyre. Just inside the wall of tyre so hopefully i can get plugged. Dont want new tyre at this time of year. Exactly 5622 miles since last puncture and new Tyre.
Nae luck what so ever. >:( >:( >:(

Are you an IAM/RoSPA trained rider who chases Nerg Nail down the gutter line on the approach to right-handers by any chance?

Brian (who rarely rides further left than the path taken by car's left-hand tyres and by coincidence, so far, touch wood, has never, ever....no, he isn't going to tempt fate  8) )

PS That's never, as in not one since 1964!

I am IAM trained and qualified and also refuse to ride right in the crap that accumulates near the kerb, much to the dismay of my observer  ;)

Tyre now repaired and all well. Indeed it was a 2 inch nail through the tyre. Luckily enough my man at Sillets in Aberdeen knows a thing or 2 about them. Although did comment on me being his best customer. Already recommend my next change out to the New Metzeler RR. Anybody looked as these at all??

I think we have already established that the best tyres out there at the moment are the Pirelli Angel Gts.

OMFG, have a look at this. Only repaired rear tyre on Friday. Going to put bill into Aberdeen council. Must be coming from Bypass roadworks only bit of dirty road I have to travel every morning. Have to stop 3 times last night to get home as garage shut for repair. Luckily Tyre looks ok and should be repairable?? Getting sick of this.

I feel your pain  ;D No, really, it must be the pits.

I would be paying particular attention to riding in the car tyre tracks especially on that mucky section.

I would also make sure your tyre fitter isn't out at night sprinkling tacks and self-tappers on the road  :o
