For Sale / Wanted / K1200s Scorpion Exhaust - for sale
« on: February 05, 2017, 08:29:33 pm »
Hi Chaps,

Sadly the bike has now been sold but for some reason I can not understand the chap wanted the standard exhaust.
So I have a Scorpion polished exhaust including mounting bracket and link pipe for sale.
It has removable baffles and is in good condition, I loved the sound of this exhausted it was practically the reason I purchased it. The bike ran smoothly at all ranges and speeds with this fitted.

£200.

I live in Kent, UK but happy to post (at your cost).

pm me for more details

I am pulling my rad off for a clean in a couple of days.  I use the bike all year round, done 16k in last year and find it gets full of road crud and then temp creeps up when I am going slow.  I use air conditioning coil cleaner, spray it all over the fins and leave it to foam up and then rinse with cold water.  I hope that always works then paying that sort of money for a new one  :-\

Do you think there is any benefit it trying this with the rad on ?. I don't want to get into filling it under vacuum etc... however, having built my cbr from the ground up prior to my fated bmw I know how to get my hands dirty.

sounds like there isn't really an option other than fork out for a new rad :-(.

I don't think removing the fins would be a good idea it would reduce the surface area by a significant amount . You might get away with it in a UK winter but not on a 40 degree day.

Steve

Quite, I think I will avoid that little gem of advice.

Hi Guys,

I picked my 06 K1200s up from BGM in Pembury (recommended on here and he is fab by the way) and just had the 30k mile service along with new pads (which were just strips of metal) front and back, fluid change etc..

Unfortunately the bike is running hot, generally 5 bars and creeping up to 6 in traffic. I gave the rad a good clean and thought it was ok but according to Brian it is fluffed up and needs replacing.

Given I have just spent £425 on it and a rad alone is £450 he wisely suggested I limp it through to its 36k mile service where there is no additional labour to fit the new rad.

Of course I am starting to wonder if it is time to move the bike on, love riding it and don't want to but it is a commuter and the costs are adding up to more than it is worth (I assume value is around £3500 and the next bill is close to £900 for service and rad).

Has anyone found refurbished radiators or had luck with cleaning more than just a brush on the front of the rad ?. Someone recommended knocking out all the fins because they aren't doing anything other than blocking air flow anyway. Apparently they have done this on several bikes but it clearly is a short term solution.

Thanks chaps

I need to invest in a tracker.
Every bike is a target, not just an opportunity theft.

Either the ebay used parts market is very lucrative or they all must go abroad. I can't imagine there are scores of uk bikers willing to buy a stolen bike.

that sir is spectacular !

I live in the country side and own plenty of shotguns and firearms, sometimes I leave the bike out as bait for the local reprobates from the town :D :D.

Currently I get to dump the bike at ebbslfeet station which is manned by BTP, parking attendants, covered  in security cameras and dedicated sheds for bikes. Really not looking forward to my commute changing soon and parking in central london. I know a recent load of GS were hauled away on Oxford street in the middle of the day, disgusting !.

Sounds like I will probably live through an ABS failure then. Unless of course I am completely distracted by the red flashing triangle and whilst trying to work out what is wrong I put it into a ditch.

It has been an interesting learning curve getting onto the k12s. It rides so very differently from all the other bikes I have had in my off beat  past. Mainly these have been relatively lightweight 900 supersports. The whole front end arrangement and wheelbase length span my head out and I hated the bike for the first week, of course now I love it.

just a shame its rear end is soooo fat with the panniers. it does make filtering a little tricky (breath in...breath in..phew that was probably close).

And I tried so hard to push those worms back in   ;)

two fingers for me, sometimes just my index finger on the front brake.
Bad habit of trail braking into corners, not a great idea on rubbish kent roads covered in crud !.

As we are off topic. Should the ABS fail do the brakes still work on my post servo bike ?. I have never had abs on a bike and whilst I am sure it is awesome I like to think I could probably stop if it failed (assuming stopping involves more than putting a stick through the front wheel or throwing on anchor overboard).

Ordered a set so when they arrive and i get time I'll report back and let you all know or scream for help again.

I hate to open this can of worms but one of the quickest and smoothest riders I have ever followed almost never uses his brakes.

I have been almost locked up on the way into roundabouts and his brake lights have never been on, not even once.

Clearly I am not using the rev range of the engine on the way down the box, and nor are you!

Brian (who is now trying to get the lid back on  8) )

 :D different styles I guess.

I once made a CBR engine implode with too much engine braking (no slipper clutch) on track so I probably became a bit more brake biased then. Plus I learnt to use the brakes for turning it in / settling in the corners about a year ago which suits my style more.

Anyway I won't go into all of that, just glad he was so helpful and the diagnosis makes sense. Keeping my eyes open for a decent used set now. I can't have it off the road so will need them before I tackle the issue.

I appreciate all of the help peeps !

Then I don't stand any hope, we don't have potholes in the south east uk  just massive sink holes on every corner. It is like dodging landmines around here!.

A quick update after my visit to BGM.

Really nice bloke and very helpful.

He took the bike for a test ride, when he got back he had a smile on his face. Told me I must be a rather 'spirited' rider as most people wouldn't notice the issue, wanted to know what other bikes I ride / have ridden. Apparently the brakes are ok compared to others but he agreed they weren't perfect and if your pushing on they don't have that snap. he did a road test of the abs and it worked fine (bigger kahuns than me to test it).

The pads are genuine and half worn so his diagnosis was crud and general muck / wear on the callipers.  Which makes complete sense given the conditions I have been riding in. He took the time to draw me a diagram and show me how to clean the pistons. Even showed me the rubber washer that can get pushed out if the things are too full of muck.

He wouldn't bother buying new from BMW (because of the price) and suggested buying a good looking used pair from the east coast of the states with pads (because of the weather there is little corrosion). He even took the time to look on ebay for me and find some good ones!!.

His workshop is amazing, clean and he clearly knows his onions not a messer as Guy Martin would say.

So I will look at buying some replacement callipers (only around $70 without shipping) before giving the current ones a clean down.  That way if they dump the o rings or look trashed during the clean I can just swap them over. He even offered to buy the units off me if I didn't use them.

of course I could just slow down but I didn't buy a k1200s to hang around on  ;D
