2009 K1300GT will not turn over when hot

Hi All,

I've had a 2009 K1300GT for around 12 months and am generally really pleased with it. The only issue I have is that whenever the bike has run hot (e.g. in traffic or the air is hot and the cooling fan comes on) and the engine is stopped from kill switch or engine stall, then the bike feels like it has a very flat battery if I try to restart it. If I walk away from the bike and leave it for an hour to cool down (engine not running) it starts fine. I replaced the battery a month ago to see if that was the problem but the issue remains - it was SO BAD the other day I stalled the bike filtering in stationary traffic on the M1 and it would not restart - I was stuck on the fast lane hard shoulder and the traffic speed picked up to normal speed leaving me stranded in the central reservation - I dialled 999 :)

I took the K1300GT to my local BMW dealer in Long Eaton who told me it was a hot start issue and wanted to charge me £250 to fix it. Googling around it seems this is a common fault and I challenged the dealer who put a claim into BMW central only for it to be denied as the vehicle is outside warranty.

I believe this is a design fault, certainly not some kind of wear item and should be fixed FOC - maybe even a re-call - in my case it was a real safety issue being stuck on the M1.

Has anyone successfully challenged BMW on this issue and had the bike fixed?

I know who you are, surprise , you were spotted on my last trip to my son who is a leichester resident. B&Q manager.
The hot start is an ongoing issue, was for a while an open recall but it is now closed.  Still your dealer can put a puma request and as in many cases before you will get a the new wirring foc.
 If after all they still want 250 let me check the price here and will ship it to you at a fraction of this.

Hi all,

I get the same thing on my 2008 K1200gt. The gearbox gets hot. The other day I had trouble finding neutral.( I don't usually)

If it stalls I take it out of gear and it is less reluctant to start. Out of gear and clutch out.

I guess you already do that..

Hmm! Never heard of the box getting overly hot before. I guess the gearbox would run at the same temperature as the bottom half of the engine; somewhat cooler than the top half of the engine (cylinder head & cam chest).

When my K13S does its own hot-non-start-thing, even thrashing it with branches of the appropriate tree has little to no effect on the bugger.

Just out of interest for people, I've had my K1300S Motorsport now for 18 months and after reading this thread asked my dealer if it had the hot start mod or not.  Turns out it is not automatically fitted to K1300S since BMW discovered the problem which seems odd even if I understand not doing a general recall for all bikes.  Away this week on the bike and you can tell the difference when re-starting after a short coffee brake.  If you are lucky enough to have a K1300S still under warranty might be worth getting done!  Peter

Happened to me on a run earlier in the year. We were using the drop-off system and I was marking a turn, been on tick over for about 3 or 4 minutes in the heat, so I stopped the engine. As soon as I done it I knew I was in trouble  :-[.

(My K13GT also had the same problem)

Hi, an update. BMW says they won't pay a penny due to the bike being out of warranty. They put a request to BMW central who I've also spoken to and they say the same. £193 is the price for parts and labour from the BMW dealer.

Is there anyone on here who has had BMW pay for the new wiring loom when their bike is outside warranty?

If anyone has a lower cost route I would be interested .
