30 litre tail pack
« on: August 12, 2016, 03:44:29 pm »
Has anyone experience of the 30-35litre soft tail pack. I'm just looking at options for next month's trip. My k doesn't have a rack so was looking at putting it on the rear seat.

It's a nice one but found it not convenient, some have reported issues with stiches too, plus its expensive,  sold it at the first oportunity, now am a huppy owner of the bigger 55lit bag and absolutely love it.

I think the 55 litre bag will be over kill. I looks a nice bag but as you say is expensive for something made in China!

I have the 35litre soft tail pack and rack and have found it to be excellent, no problem with the stitching and 100% water proof.
It attaches securely to the BMW rack with the supplied straps.  I also have the sport panniers and found these, along with a small tank bag, enough for me and my misses for a 12 day trip to Switzerland.  The more room you have the more you will take regardless of whether you actually need it or not. Pack sensibly and it’s amazing how little you actually require.
 P.s there is a K1300s BMW rack on E-bay

 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Motorcycle-Rear-Rack-K1200S-K1300S-/232013010236?hash=item36050d953c:g:YdgAAOSw2zlXh-wk.

If you aren't going to attach it to the BMW rack then personally I would look elsewhere for your luggage solution and spend the cash you would have spent on the BMW rack and bag for a non BMW item which will do the job just as well but much cheaper if cost is an issue.

Thanks for the advice . Just seen a 2015 ride magazine best buys tail pack and the 35 litre comes as recommended but gets top score only let down by price.  I don't have a rack so may try a different option for this trip ( only three weeks away ;D) .

I bought a jofama tail bag and it fits my K1200 perfectly.  Made I believe by harvelsons.  Can't remember exactly what I paid, think they retailed at about £50 in Jersey ( no Vat ) which is where I bought it, dealer had it displayed on a used K 1300.

Hi Baldbiker. I am not trying to teach you to suck eggs but as it sounds as though you are going to strap luggage to the seat, in the absence of a rack,  are you aware that there are two luggage loops incorporated and hidden under the seat for just such a purpose?

I have attached an extract from the manual wich shows the details.
Apologies if you were aware of this already.  ::)

I did see that but thanks anyway. Not quite a month of ownership so any hints, tip and advice more than welcome.

Hmmm, not sure i would use the luggage straps TBH not the strongest looking. I have used both bags and found the 55 lt to be the best solution. Although agree it is on the big side for smaller trips. However easier to pack, small bag not the biggest top to open up. Have to fold up shirts etc to fit in, but that might be my OCD kicking.  Used OEM staps and found them to be great. However i use Rok straps on most occasions to be on safe side. No issues at high speed either.

I've used the Kriega 30L tail pack for over a year, almost daily for commuting and a couple of times for weekends.

Comes with straps for the luggage mushrooms (if you have them), and is very secure.

Weekdays I use it with an aluminium case that my small laptop case goes inside, and there's still room for gym gear. At weekends, it'll safely and dryly hold full change of clothes/shoes/toiletries. Front/top zip pocket is good for sundries.

I've been cinching it down hard all year and the straps and clips are as new. Very impressed, and all for under 100 spondoolies.

DC, how do you mean straps for the luggage mushrooms?  I mean I assume you mean the bits that we hook the sports panniers on, but which of the two straps (one with buckle, one with alloy hook) that come with it lend themselves to attaching to that mushroom?

I ask because I'm pretty sure reading your post was what made me buy one this/last week :D... and then I promptly flipping forgot about the post above with the hoops!  I'm going outside now to fix that.  And hopefully later when you reply and (Clarissa) explain(s) it all.

My pack came with a few straps. There were straps with tension loops (buckles) that tighten around the luggage mushrooms. I tucked the long tails under the seat. The alloy hooks then hook onto these loops on the mushrooms.

I left the alloy hooks attached by plastic clips to the pack when taking the pack off. Leaving just the loops on the mushrooms.

Can post photos if I've not explained myself clearly (often happens!)

Am always attach a tie rap in any available place  hidden fm the eyes of people if possible,  just to make sure that nothing will be lost , plus a potential thief would need more time and effort to find it first.

Nice, practical tip Costas. I applaud you!

But, not too convenient for trips where you move hotels every night! Still worth doing though  8)
