Quick Shift bearing failure

After buying my K1300s anni in November 2023 the bike was delivered after the dealer (independent) had finished doing some repairs, long story short after a couple of months I notice what can only be described as dirty coolant brown appearing over the starter casing. I finally discovered is was rusty oil coming from the top QS shaft seal. The seal may have been replaced at some point or could be original not sure. The shaft was wobbly I asked other owners if their shaft was lose too. All said no there was no play. So I dug the seal out and to my horror found the top bearing had gone rusty and disintegrated. I then took the QS top assembly off and water had contaminated the oil inside rotting the bearing. I bought a bearing online and replace it along with the seal.

At this point I want to say I was experiencing random gear changes that were jerky and clunky replacing the bearing has cured this.

The pro was that the shaft seal had not been fitted correctly, so the seal wasn’t on the shaft far enough so seal edge wasn’t touching the shaft making a seal. Worth checking yours as it has to be a fair way on about 3 mm maybe more so be warned. I’d put images up but can’t seem to add them.

WTF?

How on earth do you get a mess like that inside the housing. It looks like a clutch of eggs from something out of Alien. I haven't seen anything like that inside an engine since I stopped using Duckhams Q engine oil back in the early'70's.

Like said the seal at the end of the shaft wasn’t in place correctly so I guess water ingress washing rain etc has crept in

Erm! Yes! That was a right mess.

I noticed a slight weep, more oil than toilet water, coming from my seal a couple of years ago and thought I need to do that when I get a round tuit. Of course, I never did get a round tuit. Hopefully mine is more oil than water, but maybe I need to do something more positive than leaving a sixpence under my pillow with a note to the tooth fairy.

Yeah I would I’ve no idea how long it’s been like this but could have been costly.

Looks like your sealant melted away in spots. My shift control housing cover was leaking oil so I had to replace the sealant (no gasket) a year ago. Used Hylomar Blue gasket jointing compound. Works perfectly…so far.

Thanks for that Eastsussex, mines OK, just had the lever off to get the expansion tank off so I could drain the coolant before changing it, I think I'd spot that amount of discharge, with no fairing it's quite visible.
