For Sale / Wanted / Re: Wanted, Exhaust for K1300R

Great news Jan. He was very nervous about sending it abroad for some reason. He wanted me to verify the condition of the Akra before he would send it because he 'didn't want any comeback'.

I explained to him that it was no different to sending to a buyer in Scotland. Who would verify the condition before he sent it in that case? Very weird.

I did a rough quote with Evri and that came in at about £12 to Belgium.

I've got one of those Induction heater things. It's really good on rusty steel like you get on 4x4 suspension. Does nothing at all to aluminium though.

Wow! Should have tried the simplest method at the beginning. I have always struggled to drill stainless bolts with my excellent set of Dormer HSS bits.

The internet said you need Cobalt bits, hardened steel with 5% Cobalt. FFS, how much difference can 5% Cobalt make?

Well, the answer is all the difference in the world.

Both handles are off, no damage apart from a bruised knuckle and it took all of ½ hour.

Drop of engine oil in the Torx head of the bolt, a screwdriver bit jammed under the head to stop it from spinning (they had all come out by about 3 or 4 threads) and a 3.5mm pilot hole, replenishing the oil every 30seconds or so so as not to work harden the bolt). Like a hot knife through butter'ish.

More oil, a 6mm Cobalt bit (the shanks are M6) and gently knock the Torx lugs off, plenty of oil and a lot more screwdriver action. About a minute drilling each one out. Had to hold the heads with a set of Swedish grips toward the end but very simple job thus far.

I found that leaving all the swarf on the blade of the screwdriver and the head of the bolt allowed it to grip under the head more effectively between the head and the steel inserts in the handle.

Now to find a weldist!

I have a cunning plan...

Assuming I can get the heads off the offending bolts by drilling, grinding or by spark erosion (isolating transformer and a chunk of 10mm shower cable  :) ) and then get the handles off, I am left with bolt shanks protruding from the Rivnuts.

Rather than struggling to drill out the bolts and then the Rivnuts to replace them (which was a right bugger last time), I am going to try to find a local mobile welder to put a couple of tiny tack welds on the Rivnut/frame to lock them in position. (Peening never worked last time).

Then I can attack the bolt shank with either my heat gun (or his gas welder), break the bloody blue glue and whip out the stubs. Simples!

Mobile MIG/TIG weldist anyone?

No, I agree Rae. I had a Pro Craft? from B&Q which was a Dremel-alike. It worked great for half the price and lasted well despite some fair abuse but eventually the motor gave out and or course, as is always the way with knock off devices, no spares were available after about 15 years.

I just wasn't banking on replacing it in this life so now I guess it gets buried with me, just in case...

Sorry Rae and all,

Looks like my son's wedding has taken priority (I know, I need to get my priorities right!)  and I won't be joining you guys yet again. Hoping to tag along in '26.
I'm now deeply worried the 'Rs will be under represented  ::)

Have fun, I'm sure you will.
Alan

My Dremel is one of my most used tools, it's 100 quid well spent.

...and that's another £100 I won't see again.

Dremel 3000 kit and a gazillion cut off wheel set.

Tyres / Re: Tyre wear planning

I used Angel Gt's on my Kawasaki GTR 1400. They seemed good, though the wear rate was (at least on that and my other kawasaki) far higher than the Michelin PR5/6GT that I use on the BMW. I really don't think that either tyre will make it!
