2006 K1200R
« on: August 24, 2020, 10:10:00 am »
Hello All!

I'll be picking up my new to me K1200R on Tuesday 1st September. Buying it via a forum I belong to (Revtothelimit/TRC before that/VD before that) and it is well serviced etc...

My first BMW.  I'm looking forward to an IL4 again. Not had one since my FJ1200 and have been on twins, triples, singles and this is my first shaft drive as well!  So that will be fun.

I have found an independent mechanic down near Tonbridge, I'm in Welling in Kent, so London!  Looking forward to the information resource and so on available in the forum.

All the best!

Welcome Reverend D! There's plenty an information on this forum about the Ks, I hope you enjoy it :).

Hi Gordon and welcome to the madhouse that is EuroKClub!

I hope that you have been doing your research in here before plumping for the KR but if not you'll find it all in here once you have it. Brian

I've been interested in these bikes for a while. The alternatives were a Speed Triple 1050 or a SuperDuke 990R.  I've had triples, I've ridden the SDR (a friends) and an RC8.  I'm 6ft5, so need something with a bit of room on it!

Getting ride of my commuter, a NC700X DCT, as I now walk to work and want something more fun! So, onwards with the torque club and rollon power.  Missed that with my FJ1200 and it was 30mph to top speed in top gear.

It would be Revd G... but I'll settle for Gordon or hey you, or excuse me sir, tea or coffee... I get called all sorts, comes with being profoundly hard of hearing, so i am used to being shouted at.

Well, next week Tuesday I'll find out.  taking the faithful Honda for its MOT just now, so I can sell it!  Had to clean the fork seal as it decided to weep a touch, not ridden the bike for a while.  5 minutes later, ForkSeal homemade cleaner and it is all shiny and dry!

MOT for the Honda was easy peasy. The MOT test man said "spot on and spotless".  It goes to a new home tomorrow.

The most important thing to realise with these early K’s...I’ll be liberal with the truth and call them ‘Work in progress’ and you really need to pull your chair up too the table and do plenty of home work.

Has it had the jump guard fitted, has it had the cam chain tensioner recall,is it running on 5/40 not 10/40.

They do have clutch issues,so again do a search and read plenty.

There might be a skeleton in the cupboard just make sure it doesn’t jump out on you  ;D

Well I know it has had the cam chain tensioner done and I think the jump guard is done at the same time.

Current owner says clutch is fine and no noises!  Service sheet shows it is running on 5W40 oil.

I am aware of the possible issues.  Drive shaft boot is new, splines greased up at the same time. Calipers all stripped and cleaned a new pads fitted. Service done at Vines in Guildford.

Getting a fairly well sorted bike I think. Either way, it is what it is.  I'll hopefully never have to repair anything and just enjoy riding it.  I've only had two bikes fail with engine issues, one was a £10 part, shift pin for the DCT, and that was a simple enough fix.  The other I chucked the engine out and replaced it with another on, CB Two Fifty engine and it cost me £25....
