Title: Talk about oil
Post by: Herscel on December 19, 2020, 07:07:44 pm
Hi folks,

There are lots of posts about the oil selection. Brand, viscosity, oil change interval... etc...

I want to ask some questions. I think also this topic may be a guide/review for our new members like me.

Which brand?

What should be the viscosity?

When should we increase the weight and viscosity of the oil? (year or km dependent?)

Which oil does K series love?

Thanks

AB.

BMW had many problems with clutch’s on early models, even as late to cover the early 1300.

Oil spec changed from 10/40 to 5/40 to solve the clutch issues

The problem then being the cam chain tensioner could not /would hold the thinner oil so there was a recall and new cam chain tensioners where fitted by BMW.

I use Silkolene Pro 4 5/40.

I used to use Castrol Power 1 5W/40 if that is any help. I think any quality brand of the right viscosity will be fine. We have a friendly oil supplier in Opie Oils who are well placed to advise.

The recommended oil used to be:
- Castrol Power 1 5W-40 (as per Rae's comment)

Now it's BMW's own oil:
- Advantec Ultimate 5W-40

So the common part is the 5W/40 spec.

See this thread for some constructive discussion:

And a cheap supplier (but that probably depends on country):

There have been such great and lengthy discussions over oil and engine pickiness, and then I get my completely different boxer engine and it has the same demands as the K.

Although in my 2019 rider's manual it has the table with "Specification" in the left-hand column and in the right:
Quote
SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2, Additives (e.g. molybdenum-based) are not permissable because they can attack... . BMW Motorrad recommends BMW Motorrad ADVANTEC Ultimate oil.

I mean it's fine right, other than a lazy copy-paste from Rich's manual (first link) and addition of a comma instead of a full stop. Or maybe my bike isn't allowed ANY oil other than the ADVANTEC which can't be 5W-40 then.

(I know it is i'm being a pedant because i'm bored)

As i understand BMW branded advantec oil is the recommended product.

What about weight? 5w40 is the first years weight but here, the authorized service of BMW increase it to 10w40 and then 15w50.

BTW i was using 15w50 Motul 7100 for my 50000km 2008 model K1200R. What is your comment on whether this is true or not?

5W-40 always. No need to change it through the lifetime of the bike.
I'm sure you can use non-BMW oil (and plenty of owners have), but for the cost of the bike it's not worth changing to something cheaper- in my opinion.

If the ambient temperature of your location is much higher than ours then all bets are off and you should go with the BMW recommendations for your country.

Not much but little bit:)

Generally 40C in summer. Today is sunny and it is 18C right now.

Before you do anything, you need to check the situation your end about the camchain tensioner recall, does it apply to you ? And if it doesn’t what does your hand book say about oil spec?

Oh and here's my K.
