Got a French speeding fine

While on our foray to Euroland I managed to get snapped. 87 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, I had a suspicion I got caught and mentioned it to Melanie at the time. The fine was cheaper than the Luxembourg one at 45€.

Maybe I could start a collection and get one in every European country.

I haven't been 'abroad' since 2015 but they seem to have got a lot sneakier with stealth cameras and no warnings signs.

I saw it Brian, a momentary lapse of concentration and not slowing down fast enough. Although I must say they have started putting up the Radar signs without there being cameras, just to confuse you and lull you into a false sense of security.

Any how it was 2€ cheaper than Luxembourg. It does grate a bit when you know you have been going much faster and get caught for a measly 7 kp/h

How long was the interval between being caught and receiving the ticket at home? I thought to have read somewhere that the correction was 5 km per hour, so you were probably riding at 92 km per hour ? We have been (mildly, but) systematically speeding on our recent Pyrenees trip; have not received a ticket (yet ?)

Contradictory enough, we weren't caught for our systematic speeding, but were instead halted for not having stopped fully at a stop sign during our very last day in France. The cop (rather persuaded by his collegue to be forgiving towards these 2 - old, so most probably wise - Belgian bikers) just let us go after giving us a big remark "when a car crosses, with a motorbike, you don't have any chance, it's dangerous not to stop fully", angry face included. So not everybody seems to have such unlucky encounters with the French police as you had, Rae ...

(regarding this old and wise : I convinced myself that must've been the reason to decide to let us go, as I have these wise looks. I didn't find any better explanation     )

My actual speed was 87 km/h with the correction factor the speed used was 82 km/h.

It's just one of those things and at 45€ not a big deal, the bonus is not having points on my license.

Was it a marked car ?

OTOH, this 80 km/h limit is ridiculous, especially the road where you were caught is one of these roads where the former speed limit of 90 km/h wasn't any dangerous, let alone 80 km/h.

The yellow jackets destroyed a lot of the fixed speed traps, which is the most important reason why this year, 30% less Belgians were caught for speeding on their holiday in France, compared to 2018.

Then it must have been this one. Well, this one's known in the OpenStreetMap's database... I even once upon a time made a youtube video here on how to extract them and put them into a GPS (in this video's case a Garmin GPS), completely for free

I thought it was against French law to have a speed camera warning feature enabled on a navigation device?
Or am I just becoming (more) paranoid?

It's illegal to have individual cameras but not "Safety Zones" which covers an area of a mile or so before and after the camera

It is absolutely illegal. In both France and Switzerland (iirc).

PocketGPSWorld have two sets of Euro cameras on the database; one including French and Swiss sites and one excluding them.

Confiscation of the device is threatened if found.
