Is it just me that hates the dark?
« on: July 08, 2018, 03:15:04 pm »
For someone who craves total darkness for my star-gazing activities, I am pathologically averse to the dark when driving or riding. Give me a 12volt sun on the front of my car or bike and I am a very happy bunny; with a dip of course... ::)

So what is it with almost every car I encounter in the dark and dead of night when they NEVER, EVER go to main beam. Unless they are coming toward me of course...

When a vehicle come t'other way I dip just before their lights become visible (ish) and go back to main beam somewhere between the front of their vehicle and the back of it, passing me.

But I can drive for miles wondering where the road goes, behind some eejit who must think, as in the old days, that using main beam actually costs you money. Of course, on the bike it is less of a problem but even so....

You haven't got those numties to yourself Brian, we have more than our share here.
Many an overtake lost because the vehicle in front is on dipped beam and often or not has his spots on as well.
Its not always the destination that counts its the ride, having a destination just stops you going round in circles.

I've notice  a large number of newer cars with bright DRLs driving along in the dark with no rear lights on. The drivers seem unable to understand the requirements to switch their lights on when the sun goes down (and at other times too).

Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

The car main beams are now really for letting you know you have carried out an overtake.

Which I usually reply to with a cheery wave* back showing that not only do I have the ability to perform a safe overtake, but I also have plenty of time to signal back in a childish point-scoring way.
Can't help it. Sorry.  :-[

*other hand signals are also available

As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everybody is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

What Brian actually types was FFFFFORF (but, and hence the apologies to Samuel Morse, the underscores I used for dashes all ran together making the O a nonsensical triple length dash. Take out the spaces and it magically becomes the O in ef orf!

Deep breath Brian I’m about to post
I find headlights on modern cars just as bad on dip beam when coming towards me for upsetting my night vision on unlit roads and as for making progress on unlit roads the headlights we have leave a lot to be desired due to the rubbish beam patterns manufacturers only appear to be able to produce these days  i was able to maintain better speed on the R80/7 on unlit roads at night than I can with the 13R and before you all say HID I tried them on my GS1150 and all they do is put more light into a still crap beam pattern ....oh halogen H4 and Cibie Z pattern where art thou now.....

Ok Brian breath 😁
Light travels faster than the speed of sound that’s why some people appear bright until they speak.
