No Longer A "K" Rider
« on: January 02, 2024, 10:14:42 am »
Well, I don't think I will own another "K" after owning so many  :-\

I've had a K1300GT, K1200R Sport, K1300S and most recently six K1600GTs one after another (thanks to the wonders of PCP). I've always loved the technology, presence and power of these bikes since I first rode one.

It all started many years ago when I went for a demo on a Kawasaki 1400GTR and felt very let down, and coming home my wife said lets go and look in there - Cannons BMW. The shop was great, the salesman was great, and the K1300GT was a revelation! ESA for swapping between one up and two up, heated grips built in, cruise control etc etc. Love at first sight - except for the price  ::) . That's when I first joined this Forum (and the GB Riders).

So I went down to Vines to ride/buy a really nice looking K1200GT, but it was sold before I got there and ended up on an ex-Demo fully loaded K1300GT in Champagne colour scheme. Luckily I get a car allowance for work, so just redirected some of that for PCP on the bike, and rode away happy.

3 years latter I rode the bike into Cannons, and rode out on my first K1600GT. The big Ks were used for some epic tours, and I also managed to buy a good K1200R Sport for one up playing, which then turned into a K1300S to sit beside the K16s.

But since Covid, my wife has stopped doing the long Tours so I no longer need that two up comfort, and I have got too old and fat for proper sports tourers - although that may have actually happened a few years ago when I started putting Superbike bars on my K1300S. Now I ride the more upright bikes - tried a 1250GSA and it was a lovely bike, but I never really gelled with it. Went to a Gen 1 and Gen 2 XR, which are stunning bikes, but now own a KTM 1290 Super Adventure (a beast) and a Ducati V4S Multi which is a really nice all rounder.

PS - this whole post was started after I read Brian's "10 years ago ..."

But but but... what are you getting next then?!

Edit: And damn it I belatedly read your current bike thing on left! But tell us more about them anyway. The fuel consumption of the Multi and the hilarious engine of the 1290 for a start :D

It's a sad day when another K rider leaves "the fold" :( but, with production of the 1300 K engines stopping in 2016 it's likely to become a more and more common event.
Correct rear brake use is scientifically proven to shorten stopping distances in EVERY road situation.

... The fuel consumption of the Multi and the hilarious engine of the 1290 for a start ...

A pair of chuggers low down, never matching the smoothness of the Ks.

The Ducati was a bit of a bargain for me - my mate bought it new with a massive spec including the full Ducati exhaust (£3k) but had a problem where he had to stop riding, so I got it off him at nearly half price (I know, what a bad friend I am ::)). A real lovely bike to ride. I have put the high seat on it and a set of bars off the Pikes Peak edition and it fits me nicely now - it felt like I was rowing a canoe before. It's quick, handles well, full luggage, cheap to run (36,000 mile valve service intervals and an oil change every other year) for a Ducati but bloody awful mpg. I struggle to get it into the 40mpg range even when going slow, but it manages about 170 miles to a tank.

The KTM was a bit of a risk as I have heard bad things, but has been a revelation to me. I bought a 2019 model to dip my toes in KTM world but found the bike put a massive smile on my face, and then traded it for a nearly new fully loaded Gen 3 model. Not as quick a Super Duke (or GT model), but fun. Great engine, great electronics, 50-55mpg  :D, chuggs and vibrates at low revs and wheelies everywhere in the midrange. The electronic anti-dive on this makes it feel a bit like a K bike on the front end, but not quite. I would love to see this with the new 1390 motor and in SMT format!

Neither of these bikes can do 40mph in top gear without shaking like Elvis  :azn:

There's a place called in MST on the Lleyn peninsular in Wales that started out selling spares and panels for Mk1 and 2 Ford Escorts then realised they had enough bits to build almost a full car...and now they do. They make them to customer spec all the way from road to Group 4 works rally spec, either all Olde Worlde or bang up to date with all the modern stuff.

Who know, maybe someone will start making K's in the far future  :winkthumbs:

:D  I think someone may have had a little too much Christmas sprit Great though the Ks were, they have been  superseded. I really don't see them having a loyal enough following to support a business building new ones.

Well, the same is true of the lld Escorts, but you'd be surprised how many of these things they are selling. Modern engines and suspension systems make a world of difference.

Now then, where do I start bulk buying spares for the K

Well, the same is true of the old Escorts, but you'd be surprised how many of these things they are selling. Modern engines and suspension systems make a world of difference.

I'm with David on this: the numbers of Escorts made far exceeded the Ks, and their value is high now. I think we (OK, I) calculated last year that there was possibly enough K1300's to support maybe a single 3rd party K specialist. Something along the lines of:
- 2,000 1300-engined bikes in 3 flavours
- 1 service per year at say £300

That's £600k in servicing turnover, but half will be SORNed, so let's say £300k.

But we can double that for other non-scheduled maintenance/parts, so back up to £600k to keep the UK's K1300 fleet running.

If the specialist is really lucky/competent they might get 25% of the UK owners to come to them. The other 75% will be too far away, go to BMW/other 3rd parties, or will never have even heard of the specialist.

Total turnover (not profit): £125k.

Of that, a chunk (20%?) of your income will be going to James Sherlock and Motorworks for secondhand spares, or you have to build up your own dry, heated, shipping container of parts - say 10-20 rat K bikes at £2-3k each.

Takign on the 1200-endogned bikes as well would help, but you're still not going to be rich beyond your wildest dreams.

Now then, where do I start bulk buying spares for the K

The one on eBay that is, as of Wednesday evening, a mere £1507. Maybe it's just the chain tensioner. You never know your luck.

Centre stand, pannier rails, quick shifter, Ilmberger hugger, and light corrosion thrown in.

Stop putting things up for me to buy please.  Totnes is only just down the road, and it's done barely over a third the mileage of mine.  Definitely a risk though.

Why no oil?
Might that make it rattle?

Found a lot of metal in it and decided not to refill? :D

So no MOT since he got it, last one in March 2022 at 14,495. So in theory he's/it's done 5k of oil burning before it expired last march.

For the preceding 6 odd years it did about 500 miles a year. Sad to have killed one at only 20k miles.

Also flipping heck he's so desperate for the money he couldn't wipe the water from the display, nor give it any kind of a clean. it's like me trying to sell my house but leaving my cat-guinea pig hybrids all over the living room floor for the estate agent photos.

Edit: and what looks like an old dead Lexus with flat tyres too. Sad times.
Double-edit: But he does have a cheese shop right outside his house so that must be reassuring. I'd like a chees shop right outside my house.
Trip-edit (i'm waiting for a friend): And are those rusty fixings such as the near-side rear subframe one just because it lives by the sea? I'm sure I never had rusty...fixings!
Quad-edit: And whoever put polish or wtf on the left side of the rear black nacelle bit needs a kick in the idiot sector.

Or dropped the oil so that prospective buyers can't start it and hear the rattle for themselves?

it's like me trying to sell my house but leaving my cat-guinea pig hybrids all over the living room floor for the estate agent photos.

When I was looking for the current hovel 7 years ago, cat-guinea pig hybrids would have been most welcome. One place in the Forest of Dean was full, and I do mean FULL of dog shit. On the parking space outside, on the drive, on the front 'lawn', in the porch, in the sitting room and in the kitchen. The estate agent had warned us about the outside but even he was shocked/revolted/retching inside. We all fled.

When I asked him about the inside he admitted none of the agents would go inside since an agent from a different firm went in to do the details and was 'invited upstairs' by the lone female occupant. Going 'Upstairs' was obviously a euphemism for something as she hitched her dress up on the way up to reveal, well, everything she had to offer. He too fled and she was most disappointed.

When Chancellors (other agents are available, unfortunately) sent their rather gorgeous young professional photographer to take piccies of Phmode Towers she made me take the new, never unrolled, tastefully co-ordinated loo roll off the holder in both bathroom and cloakroom. 'No one wants to see your loo-rolls dear.'

Considering most folks and agents think it's OK to leave the loo seat and or lid up, I thought I was being quite respectful...

So, send me cat-guinea pig hybrids any day mate  ;D

The guy who sold me my K12S even put new tyres on twixt me viewing it and collecting it. The fact those bloody Bridgestones nearly killed me by throwing me into a hedge is by the by...
